Sharp-edged Slabs: The Latest Danger on OAU Sidewalks

Image
Icon Lolade  If you're a student who walks to class every day, then listen up! There's something you need to watch out for on our campus sidewalks - open drainage holes. These holes used to be covered with concrete slabs or metal plates that fit perfectly into the opening and were level with the ground. But due to wear and tear, some of them are now partially crumbled or no longer covered. The worst part is that the new concrete slabs that have been put in place to cover them up are presenting yet another danger to students. These slabs are about four inches thick and wider in circumference than the holes they're meant to cover. That means they don't fit properly, leaving an uneven surface that could trip you up. To make matters worse, they have sharp edges that could cause some serious cuts if you fall. One way to have reduced the dangers would have been to smooth the round edges, giving them a blunter surface that would be less dang

OPINION: Why ChatGPT Is Not 100% Accurate For All Your School Assignments And Projects  Icon Adedoyin  In today's world, technology has advanced significantly, and artificial intelligence (AI) has become one of the most talked-about innovations. Recently, an AI bot called ChatGPT was introduced, and it has proven to be beneficial in various sectors, especially in the education sector. ChatGPT has enabled access to information, and it is considered a roadmap to actualizing academic tasks. It has become a solution to the academic puzzle by providing students with instant access to answers and materials needed for their academic pursuits. However, it is essential to note that AI operates based on what it has been trained to do, and it does not go beyond that. As much as it makes academic tasks more accessible, using AI, such as ChatGPT, does not guarantee academic success. Some students rely heavily on ChatGPT for their academic tasks without making any alterat

Before You Drink That Zobo, Think Twice

Image
Anonymous  Are you a fan of the refreshing and tangy taste of zobo sold in coke and fanta bottles? Well, think twice before taking a sip. You could be exposing yourself to a host of sicknesses and diseases. It turns out that many of the zobo sellers on campus store or collect their bottles in dirty and unsanitary locations, such as toilets and cobwebbed corridors. As concerned students, we're all too familiar with the sorry state of the campus bathrooms and toilets.  Just imagine drinking zobo from a bottle that was stored in one of these toilets?  Eyewitness report has spotted these bottles in different departments across campus before they are eventually taken away  Although we assume some of these bottles are recycled, there's no way to tell if the one you're drinking from was once kept in a toilet or even picked from the dustbin. As a result, you could be drinking harmful bacteria and viruses that could lead to severe health issues. So, before yo

Icon Lolade  Active listening is a crucial element for building a deep connection between partners. It involves paying full attention to your partner, asking open-ended questions, and showing genuine interest in what they have to say. Here are some ways to practice active listening: Firstly, give your partner 100% of your attention. Put away distractions like phones and books, and maintain an open and relaxed posture. By giving your partner your undivided attention, you are creating intimacy. Secondly, ask questions at intervals. Be curious, but do not pass judgment. Use open-ended questions to clarify what your partner is saying, and avoid questions that co

He thanked Nigerians for their tolerance during his eight-year regime. While the government was initially celebrated at its onset, it later became one of the most criticized in Nigeria and the world. From the controversial closure of surrounding borders to the introduction of new naira notes that were met with resistance, the government faced its fair share of criticisms. One of President Buhari's strongest critics, Omoyele Sowore, who was arrested several times by the DSS, took to Twitter to voice his opinion. How Elon Musk Twitter Rule Can Promote Fraudsters

Image
Icon Adedoyin  The world was taken aback when Twitter announced the removal of blue check verification marks on Thursday, April 20th, 2023. This move has sparked numerous conversations and raised concerns about its effects. In November 2022, Elon Musk shared a tweet that read, "Widespread verification will democratize journalism and empower the voice of the people." It was a noble idea, but Twitter's decision to make verification a paid service has some negative consequences. The removal of blue check verification marks means that any Tom, Dick or Harry can create a fake account and impersonate notable personalities, organizations, and bodies. Criminals can pay a sum as low as $8 and commit fraudulent activities under the guise of a verified account. This is disastrous because users and followers won't be able to differentiate between legitimate and illegitimate accounts. Verification marks used to be the only way of confirming the authenticity of an accou

CAMPUS NEWS: Road linking Fajuyi Hostel to the Market lacking security lights Icon Adedoyin  The lack of security lights along the road leading to the central market has been causing concern for students, traders, and commuters alike. The road that links the ETF hostel and the central market is pitch dark and poses a serious threat to anyone walking along it, especially at night. The road is flanked by tall and thick bushes that could be hiding any number of dangerous animals, leaving pedestrians vulnerable to attack. Students who need to move at night for tutorials or studying are particularly at risk, as are residents of the ETF hostel who must navigate the road frequently. The road is one of the busiest on campus and it is unacceptable that it lacks proper lighting, putting so many people at risk. It is time for the management of OAU to take action and provide security lights to illuminate the road and ensure the safety of those who use it. We call upon the u
