In a recent development, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has directed the immediate demolition and sealing of multiple buildings in Banana Island, following the collapse of a seven-storey building under construction on First Avenue. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of the morning, claimed the lives of several construction workers.

The governor, who visited the site of the disaster, expressed his disappointment at the actions of some housing developers in Banana Island who allegedly flouted building regulations and approvals. He accused them of hiding under the guise of Federal Government agencies to construct illegal structures within the state.

According to Sanwo-Olu, the state government has the sole responsibility for approving building plans and permits. He revealed that none of the four buildings surrounding the collapsed structure had been granted appropriate approvals or applied for them.

The demolition exercise will affect several completed and uncompleted buildings that have various building infractions and those that have not been granted appropriate approvals for construction by government agencies. The governor emphasized that the exercise was necessary to ensure the safety of citizens and prevent a recurrence of such incidents in the future.

This development comes as a wake-up call to developers who flout building regulations and underscores the importance of strict adherence to building codes and standards to ensure the safety of all residents.
