Russia Attacks Ukraine

Image
The Russian President claimed that his country was suffering from constant threats from Ukraine. He stated that his goal was to protect people suffering from bullying and genocide.  He aimed at the demilitarization and de-nazification of Ukraine but there had been no genocide in Ukraine.  The invasion that Russia promised would never happen has started resulting to war between both neighbours.       On the 24th of February 2022, the Russians attacked Ukraine at dawn. They struck a missile at the country's (Ukraine) second largest city, Kharkive. The Ukrainian government urged the citizens to stay calm and appealed to international countries to stop the Russian president, Vladimir Putin.         The war broke out because Ukraine wanted to join NATO alliance which the Russians are against. President Putin wants Ukraine to be politically under his control. He is against Ukraine making its own independent foreign policy like forming an alliance with NATO. Russia with Ukraine is an

FIVE POINTERS TO YOUR PURPOSE Ever stopped to wonder what reason you were placed on planet earth for? Several people cannot pinpoint the reason for their existence. This often affects their dispositions in life. They are mediocre and aimless when tasks are given to them. A popular saying goes thus, "when the purpose of a thing is not known, abuse is inevitable". Inability to discover your purpose early affects important choices in life including course of study, career path, future partner, location and so on. I hope you discover your purpose through the following pointers:  (1) Your Passion and affections: When you find something you do that you are enthusiastic about and doesn't make you fizzle out in strength no matter how strenuous, that means that is your passion. In history, men who have changed the course of the world are men who were passionate about something. What are you passionate about? What excites you? (2) Your Potentials: While some potentials are inheren

Red Flags

Image
RED FLAGS🚩 I want a lover who wants to hear me. I can't say when exactly and even now, am better single than taken for granted.... Toluwani cried out loudly, she said to me, " this motherf***er doesn't care about my mental health!" Tolu and Femi recently celebrated 5 years of being together. So what went wrong? I was so inquisitive and I needed to know what happened. I called Femi and Tolu, heard from both sides and the biggest lesson I learned in their relationship is, "never ignore the red flags." What are Red flags in a relationship? Red Flags are signs indicating a reason to cease or back away from an unhealthy relationship. When you start a new relationship, the romance, love and excitement can blind you, and you may not be conscious of the signs.  Red Flags to watch out for when you're dating someone. 1) Abusive Behaviour. This is one of the biggest and most obvious red flags that people ignore. Abuse varies in different forms, it can be physica

OAU Hostel: Many More Exposed Soakaways

Image
If you stay on Campus hostel, this is for you! Sequel to the painful and heartbreaking news of the avoidable death of Ajibola Heritage, I decided to take a walk around my hostel, Moremi hall on campus. To my greatest surprise, I encountered a few unsuspecting opened soakaways. They look unsuspecting because they have doors. The soakway is the first door you see before the bathrooms and toilet doors. Some are completely opened, slightly opened and a few, completely covered.  I took a step of faith to look into the completely opened ones and what i saw was rather heartbreaking. Excreta and other waste produce clouded the soakaway. A student might unknowingly slide into the opened soakaway after a long bath or after using the toilet.  A fresher might also mistaken it for a bathroom door. Worse still, a student might just sleep walk into one of these soakaways. This deplorable sight brought back memories of the Late Heritage Ajibola. I pray her family is given the fortitude to bear this

A MINUTE SILENCE HELD IN HONOUR OF HERITAGE ON THE FOOTBALL PITCH In the early hours of today, the Obafemi Awolowo University football sides, Crajax of English and Linguistics Department Football Club, engaged in a friendly football match at the Porters' Gate Stadium.  The football match which was held in readiness for the upcoming University Carabao Cup with which both the Crajax FC and Linguistics FC are participants, saw Crajax winning the Linguistics sides 2 goals to 1 at full time.   However, at halftime, both team players and crew decided to honour their recently departed classmate and coursemate, Heritage Ajibola, in a standing one-minute silence demonstration.  All Players and members of crew gathered in an almost circle at the midfield box and a minute silence was observed by everyone in Heritage's honour The very emotional moment halted at the referee's whistle motioning the start of the second half of the match.  In the end, one of the match's goal scorers,

Landlord harasses OAU Student, threatens her with tout on Valentine's day

Few minutes after 10pm on February 14th, 2022, the PRO of Great Ife saw a message on the WhatsApp page of the Students Representative Council of Great Ife that some ladies/students were been threatened by the landlord in conjunction with a particular security guard over an issue and that they had been locked  up in their room and they were suffocating.      The SU PRO had to take a step of action and he called another comrade, Oluwanoni, the Sport Director and upon getting there, the lady recounted what happened and narrated that she had paid for the electricity in the rented apartment as at February 2021 and the agreement was #12,000 per year. It was a one time payment which she had already made but she said the landlord is requesting extra charges,  #1000 for last month (January)and another #1000 for February. She insisted that she won't be paying again because she had an agreement with the landlord and because of this disagreement over unpaid NEPA bill, the lady was locked up in

Ayinde

Ayinde beckons to me And I follow It is no ordinary spell That which is cast on me For when I see his beautiful eyes I forget all of his lies. Ayinde plays a tune And I dance to it It is no ordinary spell  That which is cast on me For when I hear that entrancing baritone I submit to his device Ayinde touches me And I yield Again it is no ordinary spell That which is cast on me For when his palms caress my thighs I surpass the skies Ayinde I want to do mine Ayinde it is time If I beckon, would you follow? Ayinde I won't lie. Ayinde I want to sing too Ayinde it is time At the sound of my soprano, would you dance? Ayinde can you submit? Valentine's Day Turns Grieving Day As Thief Storms Adam and Eve Hostel

Image
On Monday, February 14 which happens to be Valentine's day, a day meant for the celebration of love, a student's hostel along Ibadan road, close to Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife was thrown into weeping, lamentations and grieve as residents experienced a cleverly orchestrated theft. In the early hours of Monday, around 4:00AM-5:00AM, students were stripped of their properties. The thief who carried out this malicious act is suspected to be an individual who knows the hostel's environs very well, because of his strategic and well planned operation. The thief made his way through the back of the hostel's fence which was secured with barbed wire. He tore the nets of windows in seven rooms, slided the louvers and successfully made away with four phones. It was also reported that the thief stole a purse through the window but left it in the compound as the suspect couldn't find anything valuable to him in the purse.  The theft went smoothly as those who fell victi

ASUU Strike Begins

Image
ASUU BEGINS STRIKE! The above statement is one that gives students in Nigerian Universities cold feets and a troubled heart. The Academic Staff Union of Universities in a lame man's understanding is the arm or union responsible for all academic palorama that happens in a university community. For the past few weeks different news platform have been reporting about the impending ASUU strike that is to happen.   Recently, ASUU OAU declared that the union is going on an indefinite strike as result of the unpaid Earned Academic Allowance by the school management to the deserving members of the union.  However, the school management released a counter statement to the release of ASUU saying that classes are ongoing and that parents should disregard any information from a section of the Academic staff of the university but recent happening shows that some departments in the university have not been having classes while some have been cancelled by lecturers leaving the students in a stat

What is it about over-excitement at a wedding proposal?

Image
Wedding Proposals: A Big Suprise Or Just Poorly Done Acting. Primarily, we can not deny that Africans approach to marriage defer from the western world or the Americans.  Wedding expenses and cost is really not a thing common to none Africans but it's something African spend years saving or even going into debts for; spontaneous proposals isn't really our thing. Our Fathers met our mothers via family matchmaking. Like,  "Tolu, how's is work in Lagos? Okay when are you coming down for New Yam Fastival? We have found a girl for you." "Tinuke, we have found a man for you. He is hardworking and blue blood." And blablabla This is so unlike the 'Oyibos' who would meet at a cafeteria or on a bus and start dating.  Dating doesn't always lead to marriage, you know. The "Oyibos" are more aware of this, so the proposal hits a surprise. Hollywood movies have played a great role in the Afro-American civilisation. Thus, the introduction of marr

Love as friends

Image
One of the strongest bond that exist and can last a lifetime is FRIENDSHIP  Present day love is filled the facade of displaying perfection. So many lovers act in certain ways to show how amazing they are when indeed they're not.  But friends show their ugly and beautiful sides all the time with little or no fear of being accepted.  Love that steams out of friendship last longer because at the moment they move a step higher, they've already formed a connection in the most sincere atmosphere.  They know each other without any premonition of taking it further. They've been so real and have become accepted by their partner.  Conversations are in their most pure form in friendzones and can later produce the best of companions when love happens Embrace friendship and let love grow properly  This lyrics spell it out clearly:  It's so rare to find a friend like you Somehow when you're around The sky is always blue The way we talk, the things you say The way you make it al

Justice For Heritage

Image
GREAT IFE STUDENTS' UNION OBAFEMI AWOLOWO UNIVERSITY, ILE-IFE Ken Saro-Wiwa Building, OAU greatifestudentsunion@gmail.com Friday, 11 February 2022 FOR HERITAGE AJIBOLA, A PURSUIT OF JUSTICE  ON Wednesday, 9 February 2022, Heritage Ajibola, a Part 2 student of Department of Linguistics and African Languages, passed away after falling into a septic tank at her hostel, Bvers Suites. A painful death it is; the Union continues to mourn her while also demanding that justice is done, given that the circumstances of her death were unnatural and preventable. Before the steps taken by the Union so far are recounted, it is important to state that, above all things, one disturbing reality about Heritage Ajibola's death is that the welfare of students of this University has been seriously undermined. One is compelled to ask what amount of money would be enough to secure a safe apartment where a student can sleep eyes closed in Ife. There are increased cases of theft, extortion, amongst ot

No Strings Attached

Image
NO STRINGS ATTACHED... We are just friends with all our strings cut loose and typical like mere sashes,  The silky comfort of our souls was steaming with a fire to love and be loved, But we've tailored our matter on the table of tests and trials that we will not fall in love. But we fell into love with freewill dangling on our necks but also dragging us back, Because we didn't just fall in love, we were pushed from a hill of hot passions, No strings attached, but we've strung the strings of sacrifices with uncertainties. ©️DECHOSEN1🌹 POET: OWOEYE TAIWO BISOLA

OAU Loses A Student To Hostel Carelessness

Image
GREAT IFE STUDENTS' UNION  OBAFEMI AWOLOWO UNIVERSITY, ILE-IFE Ken Saro-Wiwa Building, OAU greatifestudentsunion@gmail.com Wednesday, 9 February 2022  UPDATES ABOUT HERITAGE AJIBOLA Heritage Ajibola, the Linguistics and African Languages student who accidentally fell into the soakaway this afternoon at Bver Hostel, Maintenance Hostels, is confirmed dead! This incident is highly unfortunate. The Union mourns her. May her soul rest in peace. May God give her family, friends and course mates the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss. It must be noted that Heritage's death was avoidable if the soakaway system was properly constructed and covered. It is saddening that this has happened despite the huge amounts of money paid by students for rent. The Management of the Hostel must answer for the death of Heritage. The Union is immediately demanding justice for Heritage, with a view to forestalling a possible reoccurrence of this. © ICONS ORGANIZATION
