Nigerian athlete and world champion in the 100m hurdles, Tobi Amusan, began her 2023 outdoor season with a strong performance at the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational in Gainesville. Amusan finished second in the finals with a time of 12.59secs, behind United States' Nia Ali who won with a time of 12.53secs. Bahamian Devyne Charlton came in third with a time of 12.64secs. The Tom Jones Invitational is an important event for athletes as they prepare for the competitive outdoor season.
This was Amusan's second competitive appearance since defending her Diamond League 100m hurdle title in September 2022, where she set a meeting record of 12.29secs. Last month, she won the women's 200m at the Tiger Track Classic in Auburn with a time of 23.38secs.
In 2022, Amusan made history by becoming the first Nigerian world champion in an athletics event, winning the 100m hurdles gold medal at the World Championships with a world record time of 12.12secs. She now has her sights set on retaining her titles and potentially setting a new record at the World Athletics Championship in Budapest in August and the Diamond League this year.
