Opinion: The Concurrent Suspension of Students Over Frivolities: Endangerment to Fundamental Humanity Right.

By Oludiran Olusola Abidemi Suspension of students in University has never been a big deal in its real sense, this is because it is part of the functions and duties of the each institution to propel sanity in accordance to their rules and regulations which basically align with the constitution of the country. University management are to go against the illicit behaviors which their students may want to put up such as examination malpractices, cultism,  violence display and other anti societal engagements which may cause rancour to the society if permitted. More so,  Universities are seen as where leaders of tomorrow are bred and reared,  it is seen as a training ground for the supposed  leaders of tomorrow, in fact some refer to university as the "home of the Universe" where highest knowledge is expected to be acquired for the growth of the country. Unfortunately,  it is so sardonic that Nigerian Universities no longer have consciousness of the importance of...

Opinion: The Menace of Sexual Harassment - Beyond Wails and Penalties

The society in this era is confronted by this disturbing social menace, sexual harassment. Perhaps, it might appear very pronounced in this era, consequent upon the jet age avenues by which information is spread. Without being narrow minded,  however, sexual harassment of any kind (rape, sex for favor or opportunities, intimidated sex, etc) dates as far back as to the history of men and society. As society advances, the perception of what is right and wrong or what is moral and immoral, as regards marital life and sexual behavior varied accordingly to respective epochs. That is, at some time and stage, sex, like marriage too, among children of brothers and sisters was seen as normal. At some other stage, sex like marriage also, among siblings of the same parent was prevalent and seen normal among men. Friedrich Engels (1884) in ''Origin of the Family, the State and Private Property," was explicitly detailed in reporting this study of men's social behavior in the anci...

Nigeria @ 59: Why and what do we celebrate?

By Olusola Oludiran. Today,  Nigeria  as country has placed in interest in tracing the memory lane to celebrate her 59th independence anniversary. In fact, the independence wishes I have got on my waking up this morning cannot be quantified. It is apparent there is this high level of happiness in the mind of the Nigerians. No doubt, the federal government and state governments will  be planning something enormous to mark the independence.  To crown it all, most Religion centre have even decided pick today  as a  remarkable day for great celebration all for Nigeria independence! Ideally, what Nigerians are doing  without appealing personal sentiment should have been the best thing to do because birthdays are for celebrations and merry making , provided you have lived a life worthwhile. But it is so unfortunate that Nigeria as a country does not have any thing to show forth as a sign of growth and development as an independent count...

Opinion: The Constitution or The Revolution -which Wayforward?

Since the abduction of Omoyele Sowore, the word 'revolution' has been more popular in Nigeria, and no doubt, the word has equally resonated across the globe in weeks. But what sparks the spectre of revolution hunting the country is beyond Sowore, and it is what seems to be unclear to the Nigerian government under Gen. Muhammadu Buhari. Whether it is out of pretence or careless tyranny, I cannot answer for them. However, the misery in the land is enough to ignite the talk of revolution on the lips of even a toddler in Nigeria. It is more systemic than hinging it on, and blindly attacking Sowore's role in such a revolutionary period Nigeria is pregnant with. The tyranny exhibited under the Muhammad Buhari government consistently reminds and takes us back to military era. The rape on the country's constitution alone rings it in the ear that indeed, the revolution must cut across curing the constitution too. Contrary to constitutional procedures, Sowore was abducted by t...

Opinion: LET'S KICK START NIGERIA’s RENAISSANCE

If African China’s “_Mr. President_” is yet to be disappointed, then I wonder why someone will not wake up one day and call the whole of Africa a graveyard, seeing Nigeria as an epitome. At times it seems to me that Nigeria as a people do not really worth Nigeria as a land. We push problems that the government are responsible for to God for solution and even burn candle over them as if we voted for God. Majority of those that vote are illiterates who choose something different from what they want because of those _bizarre items_ they receive, which incites them to believe they are doing the right thing, and this is what led to the emergence of bad leaders. Now, those that couldn’t endure the sun are the ones raving and ranting that the government is corrupt, especially on Social Media. Which means _Illiterates elect leaders for literate,_ while the _literates follow the elections on their TV and cell phones._ I laugh in Spanish when some people say “_Go...

Life without competition

Image
By Afolabi Rachael Life is not only about fashion, wearing fancy clothes and shoes; it is also about how or what you designed your life with. New designs are developed everyday. You used a particular one and you are already tired of it within a little time. When you design your life, then you can become the CEO of your life and then dictate your wants. You don't have to procrastinate, or wait for anyone to design your life for you, because if you don't design your life, you may become outdated or loose your value. It is just like "if you don't decide what is best for you, someone else will decide for you" So, why don't you take charge of your life? Those who inform you about new products will be the ones telling you when those products are not "in place." Instead of evaluating yourself based on what people say, why don't you focus on yourself? Because, if you focus too much on what people say about you, you will not listen to your mi...

ABOUT SCHOOL

Image
By Kehinde Babajide “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid” – Albert Einstein. Looking at it critically, every student is equivalent to the fish, swimming upstream in class, never finding their gifts thinking they are stupid, believing they are useless. Our world is fast-changing and we have students who go to school and see it as a temporary cage. The school trains students to work in factories which explains why they put students in straight rows. What we have in schools today is a common core. For example, if a doctor prescribe the same medication for all his patients, they will all die, the same thing is applicable to the classroom where we have students with different needs, different gifts, different dreams and a teacher teaches them the same way, it is tragic! If it is possible I would sue “school” because it kills creativity, individuality, and for being intelle...

Opinion: THE OBSOLETE IN THE CONTEMPORARY*

By Kehinde Babajide _“Education is not a preparation for life; education is life itself”_ –JOHN DEWEY Learning is supposed to be  ritual-like for all humans, this is a situation where education comes in as a means of raising informed and intellectual minds. But, but and but, it has gotten to a stage whereby learning has become outdated or let me say expired. My focus is on the Nigeria education system. People in Nigeria are getting an expired education. That is why you see people who studied engineering and are not able to do engineering feat. You see people who studied computer science and are not able to understand anything or diagnose computer language. This is because Nigeria’s education system is a dilapidated one. The education system in Nigeria has been able to lobotomize so many people, the culture of using ancient materials to raise the present generation is not ideal. The formal and informal education in Nigeria are outdated. Scientific theori...

Opinion: HYPOCRISY

By Kehinde Babajide _“Better to illuminate than merely to shine to deliver to others contemplated truth than merely to contemplate.”_– Thomas Aquinas Engaging in the same behaviour or activity for which one criticizes another. Hypocrisy can be described as dissimulation, pretence, or a sham. Hypocrisy is predominant part of our present day society as well as societies of the  past. It’s a kind of lie. Hypocrisy scares people, but no matter how hard you try to not be one, you are. To hate hypocrites is to hate yourself, and you are weak. By existing on earth we are subject to our own hypocrisy. Adults always teach the youth the right and the wrong. But when it comes to them to take decisions then they often choose the wrong one claiming it is best for all of us. In some ways we, youngsters are also hypocrites as we often tell lies to our parents to avoid getting grounded. For example we often lie to our parents about secret boyfriends, bad marks in...
