Opinion: THE OBSOLETE IN THE CONTEMPORARY*

Learning is supposed to be ritual-like for all humans, this is a situation where education comes in as a means of raising informed and intellectual minds. But, but and but, it has gotten to a stage whereby learning has become outdated or let me say expired. My focus is on the Nigeria education system.
People in Nigeria are getting an expired education. That is why you see people who studied engineering and are not able to do engineering feat. You see people who studied computer science and are not able to understand anything or diagnose computer language. This is because Nigeria’s education system is a dilapidated one.
The education system in Nigeria has been able to lobotomize so many people, the culture of using ancient materials to raise the present generation is not ideal. The formal and informal education in Nigeria are outdated. Scientific theories that were formulated and propounded in the 18th and 19th centuries still rule the science world, we have no avenue for new ideas. Tertiary institutions in Nigeria engage in outdated learning everyday, the use of books written years back (though important) is still effective, meanwhile, modern books are seen as inferior.
Thus, the outdated education has become a “hit-and-run” making the victims to be less intelligent, and they have also become bad decision makers towards life situations. Parents of the present age use the old style to train their children, they don’t teach their children to be leaders, they train them to be technocrats.
A hocus-pocus that has destroyed the foundation of Nigeria, the cause of Nigeria’s problems is lack of quality education. Late Nelson Mandela once said: “Education is the only weapon you can use to change the world.”
Education must provide the opportunities for self-fulfillment; it can at best provide a rich and challenging environment for the individual to explore, in his own way. If we must fix Nigeria, we should fix the education system. It is also necessary for the present generation to imbibe the culture of self-learning. It’s not really about what course you studied in the university but what ideas you have that will change the society. The existence of new ideas which should be shared amongst ourselves is vital. I repudiate the idea of repeating books and other educational material every year.
Men are born ignorant, not stupid. They are made stupid by education.
