ABOUT SCHOOL

By Kehinde Babajide

“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid” – Albert Einstein.
Looking at it critically, every student is equivalent to the fish, swimming upstream in class, never finding their gifts thinking they are stupid, believing they are useless. Our world is fast-changing and we have students who go to school and see it as a temporary cage.
The school trains students to work in factories which explains why they put students in straight rows. What we have in schools today is a common core. For example, if a doctor prescribe the same medication for all his patients, they will all die, the same thing is applicable to the classroom where we have students with different needs, different gifts, different dreams and a teacher teaches them the same way, it is tragic!
If it is possible I would sue “school” because it kills creativity, individuality, and for being intellectually abusive. The avenue for the students to think creatively and independently is missing, yet they put them in a room in straight rows. Tell them to put up their hands when they want to speak, give them a little time for break and eight hours to think. This is suicide.
Nothing has changed, yet they claim to prepare students for the future. This would lead me to my question. Do they prepare students for the future or the past?
Away from that, the way the employees are treated, teachers are under paid which makes students short changed. They should learn as much as doctors, because it is the most important job, a doctor can treat and care for a patient but a teacher would reach the heart of a student and make him/her to truly live.
The world has progressed, we need people to think creatively, critically, inovatively, intellectually, and independently to bring about connection. A country like Finland is doing better in education, they have shorter school days, teachers make decent wages, home-work is non-existant and they focus on collaboration instead of competition. Therefore, they are better than any other country in the education system.
We don’t want the fish to climb trees but be independent. Posterity will curse us if we do not make changes now.
A child educated only at school is an uneducated child.
