Nigeria @ 59: Why and what do we celebrate?
By Olusola Oludiran.
Today, Nigeria as country has placed in interest in tracing the memory lane to celebrate her 59th independence anniversary. In fact, the independence wishes I have got on my waking up this morning cannot be quantified. It is apparent there is this high level of happiness in the mind of the Nigerians. No doubt, the federal government and state governments will be planning something enormous to mark the independence. To crown it all, most Religion centre have even decided pick today as a remarkable day for great celebration all for Nigeria independence!
Ideally, what Nigerians are doing without appealing personal sentiment should have been the best thing to do because birthdays are for celebrations and merry making , provided you have lived a life worthwhile. But it is so unfortunate that Nigeria as a country does not have any thing to show forth as a sign of growth and development as an independent country. In fact, Nigeria should be seen as a country a fifty nine years old woman who has refused to walk yet, but still crawling.
Taking a close look and giving a rapt attention to all sectors of Nigeria, it is conspicuous that none of the is working effectively, without much emphasis , most sectors are paralysed and struggling to survive.
Examining the education sector of the Nigerian, there is no doubt that the sector is nothing to write home about compare to other countries, the united nation standard of budget allocation of 26% has always been defied by Nigeria government , instead frivolities have been over rated beyond the necessity. How does a country that does not invest in education boast of a glowing future? What a mirage!
Furthermore, the security of this country has become so porous that no life is secured anymore, the security personnels cannot function in securing the lives and properties of Nigeria as; the deterioration has eaten so deeply to the point that the Fulani herdsmen are now the biblical Palestine to the our Israelites. Inspite of this, the authority derives joy in using their security boys to oppress the innocent activists who have done nothing but ask the question alas! They get detention as their replies.
In terms of employment and poverty rate, it is no more news that Nigeria is regarded as the headquarter of poverty and unemployment in the world. This is because the state of irresponsibility of her leader is likened to Mount Everest. The greed of the leaders in Nigeria is cost an average citizen the worthiness of getting out of poverty. It is an undeniable fact that every country whose youths remain unemployed will definitely be wallowing in abject poverty. Yet we are still “suffering and smiling”
Having ruminated about a lot of these ridiculous occurrence which has befallen Nigeria and has turned her to an underdog among her counterparts, it is expedient to know that what is expected of all Nigerians is not an undue celebration because it faults common sense to celebrate a 59 year old woman who has refused to grow. Rather there should be a clarion call for good leadership in the . it is not enough to celebrate without having anything to show for it , instead a moment of sobriety should be considered in order to have a progressive rejuvenation in due time.
