Image
Ezekiel Ogunniyi  The Students’ Union of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has issued a stern warning to students against the illegal sale or transfer of allocated bedspaces at exorbitant prices. In a statement released on Thursday, 30th October, and signed by the Union’s President, Adelani David Oluwatodimu (Itabi); Secretary-General, Habeeb Oke Isa (Opeyemi); and Public Relations Officer, Oreoluwa Joseph Olowosile (Wà á là), the Union described the practice as “disturbing” and exploitative. According to the Union, some students have been engaging in the black-market trading of bedspaces officially allocated by the Division of Students’ Affairs, often at inflated prices that take advantage of those still struggling to secure accommodation. Freshers in Dilemma as OAU Announces CHM 103 Lecture Schedules Amidst ASUU Strike and Unsettled Admission

Image
Ezekiel Ogunniyi  Tension has heightened among newly admitted students and aspirants of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, following the release of the lectures timetable for CHM 103 (Introductory Experimental Chemistry I), which announced that practicals will begin on Monday, 3rd November. The development has sparked mixed reactions among the freshers, as the university recently joined the ongoing two-week warning strike declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). Several fresh students expressed confusion and frustration over the announcement, especially since many of them only received their admission letters within just 24 hours before the release. For weeks, most had been stuck on the “Admission in Progress (AIP)” status — a situation that delayed the resumption earlier slated for 11th October.               CHM 103 2024/25 academic session practical schedule  While...

OAU Student Earns Femi Adebayo's Recognition for Thesis on Seven Doors

Image
Taiwo Oyedeji  A final-year student of the Department of English (Literature Major), Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has earned recognition from Nollywood star Femi Adebayo for her academic research centered on his film, Seven Doors. The student, Oyindamola Ojo, gained attention after sharing a post on X (formerly Twitter) about her undergraduate project titled — “The Aesthetics of Oral Performance in Femi Adebayo’s Seven Doors,” — a study which examines how the movie creatively employs Yoruba oral-traditional elements, including proverbs, chants, songs, and rituals, to enrich its narrative and sustain cultural identity. Her post, which appealed for a retweet from the actor, caught Adebayo’s attention, as the vibrant filmmaker acknowledged her work, quoted her tweet, and personally reached out to commend her effort. “He messaged me and then quoted my post,” Oyindamola said. According to her, “Femi Adebayo...

"Blame JAMB, Not OAU": Dean Clarified Cause of Admission Delay

Image
Samuel Faseyitan  The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has since Sunday sparked confusion among prospective students, sequel to the circulation of a release signed by the Division of Student Affairs, directing newly admitted candidates to resume with their admission letter and bedspace clearance form (for those interested in staying in the university-owned hostel). Meanwhile, the institution is aware that the majority of the aspirants are still on Admission in Progress (AIP) status, and none is yet to be granted admission. The announcement has then left many aspirants frustrated and uncertain, as most have remained on the AIP status for four weeks, with none confirmed to have changed to the “Admitted” status.                      a copy of the release signed by DSA The school’s directive, requiring documents that can only be possessed by only aspirants who hav...

"Ballot and Sell": The MMM of OAU

Image
Oluwafemi Adetunji  One of the most popular timeless African proverbs — “he who has a head has no cap, while the one who has the cap has no head” perfectly mirrors the ugly realities of the undergraduate students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, particularly their struggles for the limited hostel accommodation. It is no news to the students that securing a bedspace in the OAU undergraduate hall of residence is no right but a privilege, as accommodation is allocated through an online balloting system on a “first come, first served” basis, allowing only the fastest fingers often aided by stable internet connections, to stand a chance of being granted accommodation. Those who also ballot for the hostel but lose out, are usually left frustrated and forced to seek costly off-campus alternatives. It also warned town-gbooro bus drivers and cyclists against overcharging or any form of extortion, urging students to report such cases to the commission for prompt action. The Transport Management Commission emphasized that all drivers are to continue using the same agreed prices from the last session, adding that any change in fare will not be tolerated.
