The Students’ Union of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has issued a stern warning to students against the illegal sale or transfer of allocated bedspaces at exorbitant prices.

In a statement released on Thursday, 30th October, and signed by the Union’s President, Adelani David Oluwatodimu (Itabi); Secretary-General, Habeeb Oke Isa (Opeyemi); and Public Relations Officer, Oreoluwa Joseph Olowosile (Wà á là), the Union described the practice as “disturbing” and exploitative.

According to the Union, some students have been engaging in the black-market trading of bedspaces officially allocated by the Division of Students’ Affairs, often at inflated prices that take advantage of those still struggling to secure accommodation.

“Bedspaces are not commodities to be traded for personal gain,” the Union warned, stressing that the act violates university regulations and undermines fairness and equity within the accommodation system.

It further disclosed that ad hoc committees would intensify monitoring and enforcement across halls of residence to identify offenders. Sanctions, the statement noted, may include eviction from the hostel, forfeiture of the bedspace, or even suspension from the university.

“Ignorance will not be an excuse,” the statement added, describing the notice as a final warning to those involved in the act.

Students have been encouraged to report any suspected cases of illegal or exorbitant transfers to their Hall Executives or the Union’s welfare officer.

The Union reiterated its commitment to fairness and student welfare, calling on the campus community to foster an environment where all students have equal access to accommodation without exploitation.
