The Academic Staff Union of Universities, Obafemi Awolowo University Branch, has announced that it has joined the ongoing two-week warning strike, declared by the National Leadership of the Union.

A statement dated 13th October 2025 signed by the Chairperson, Dr. Anthony Odiwe, and the Secretary, Dr. Tunde Amusan, revealed that, following a congress held earlier today, the union has complied with the national directive, that all branches withdraw their services with effect from today.

The statement further urged members to fully comply with the strike directive, as no lectures, accreditation exercises, conferences, official meetings, and public lectures are expected to be held in the university at this period.

Meanwhile, the Federal Ministry of Education has earlier disclosed the Federal Government’s position of “No Work, No Pay” policy, in response to the ongoing ASUU strike, in a statement issued this morning, by the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education, Folasade Boriowo.

According to the statement, the ministry expressed dissatisfaction with ASUU’s decision to embark on the industrial action, despite repeated calls for the union to embrace constructive dialogue as the most effective and sustainable path toward resolving all outstanding issues.

The ministry, also clarified that, academic staff who are members of the Congress of University Academics (CONUA), and the National Association of Medical and Dental Academics (NAMDA), that are not participating in the strike action, are exempted from this directive and shall not be subjected to any form of salary withholding.

The ongoing face-off between ASUU and the Federal Government has once again thrown university students into uncertainty. While the union believes that the fulfillment of the 2009 FGN/ASUU agreements can only be achieved through strike actions, the Federal Ministry of Education insists that renegotiation remains the right path to a lasting peace.

As the OAU returning students' resumption date draws near, the students hope that both sides find a common ground, to prevent the warning strike from turning into another prolonged shutdown
