Oyedokun Miracle Emerges OAU’s 5th Inaugural Poet in Thrilling Literary Showdown

 The Bloom Africa OAU Chapter has crowned a new voice for the university as Oyedokun Miracle emerged winner of the 5th Inaugural Poet competition held at Obafemi Awolowo University.

The event, themed “Who Shall Be the 5th Inaugural Poet,” showcased young poets competing for the prestigious title of OAU’s next Inaugural Poet. While 18 contestants were expected, 14 poets participated. From these, six finalists were selected before the ultimate winner was chosen.

The competition began with powerful performances that drew smiles, applause, and moments of reflection from the audience. Contestants presented thought-provoking pieces addressing societal issues, personal experiences, and national realities.

The contestants and the titles of their pieces included:
Anjolaoluwa Bankole – “Some Cups Carry Water”
Oyedokun Miracle – “Her New Name”
Oduowo Olabisi – “A Taste of Then”
Okuola Oluwadarasimi – “Before You Leave Home”
Abere Deborah – “Akin Oba”
Fabumi Victoria – “A Bridge Will Still Be Built”
Hassan Ganiyat – “Humanity”
Akintola Marvelous – “My Town – A Satire”
Deborah Moses – “The System of the People”
Taiwo Elizabeth Oluwadarasimi – “My Father’s Sacrifice”
Ademolekun Ayomide – No title
Akinbowale Oluwanifemi – “The Cry of the Masses”
Ebenezer – “Men Need People”
Adeyemi Deborah Ifeoluwa – “A Product: Made in Nigeria”

The judges for the event were Adekunle Saheed, Ewatomi, and Isaiah Adepoju, who ensured a fair and transparent selection process as contestants gave their best performances.

Speaking at the event, the organiser, Oluwatamilore Aboluwarin, delivered the welcome address on behalf of the Convener, Florence Alabi, who was absent. She welcomed contestants and guests to the gathering.

The 2nd OAU Inaugural Poet, Khadijat Summonu, also addressed the audience. She shared her journey from being a writer before gaining admission to becoming a poet and public speaker. She encouraged contestants not to be discouraged, noting that “everyone cannot be crowned,” and urged them to keep striving.

After the first round, the six finalists — Adeyemi Deborah Ifeoluwa, Deborah Abere, Oduowo Olabisi, Akintola Marvelous, Oyedokun Miracle, and Deborah Moses — returned for the final presentation. They were given five minutes to prepare new pieces on themes of their choice, delivering performances with renewed energy that impressed the audience.

Following careful deliberation, the judges announced the final positions:
6th – Oduowo Olabisi
5th – Deborah Abere
4th – Akintola Marvelous
3rd – Adeyemi Deborah Ifeoluwa
2nd – Deborah Moses
1st – Oyedokun Miracle, the new Inaugural Poet

An emotional Oyedokun expressed her excitement through tears as the audience erupted in celebration to honour the newly crowned poet.
