OAU Defeats UI, Secured a Spot in the 2026 Universities Duel Finals

Team OAU, representing Obafemi Awolowo University in the ongoing 2026 Universities Duel, have secured a spot in the final round of the competition, after defeating the University of Ibadan at the semi-final stage this evening.
Following numerous tense moments, anxiety, and intense academic battles, Team OAU emerged victorious against the University of Ibadan with a breathtaking final result of; (OAU) 101 - 43 (UI).
Universities Duel is an annual competition that features various universities, including federal, state, and private institutions, coming together to test their wits and knowledge in technology, logical reasoning, and they also compete on STEM- related questions which encompasses Mathematics, Data analysis, Verbal Reasoning and General Knowledge, for months, till a final champion emerges.
Since its inception, different universities across Nigeria have consistently participated in this healthy competition and critical thinking initiative, which continue to promote innovation, excellence, and the passion to lead.
Over 50 universities across Nigeria applied for the 2026 season of the Universities Duel, however, only the top 16 universities were selected to proceed to the next stage of the competition. A total of 48 candidates represented these 16 universities, which comprised 14 public and 2 private universities. These qualified institutions advanced to the main televised stage as they were further divided into four groups of four.
Team OAU was represented by three students who earlier represented the institution in the 2025 season, where they secured the third position. Saddled with renewed determination to bring home the crown, the trio returned for the 2026 season.
The trios include Quayum Alli, a Part 3 Electronic and Electrical Engineering student, Imran Ogungbayi, also a Part 3 student of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, and Adesina Lekan, a Part 4 student of Computer Science with Mathematics. Quayum Alli has been described as the top performer and the first person to achieve the highest individual score in the competition’s history, with a final grade of 95 points.
Team OAU progressed through different stages of the competition, and arrived at the semi-finals after defeating Covenant University (CU) with a dominant score of 94–32 in the quarter-finals on Sunday, 29 March.
Today, at exactly 6 p.m., Team OAU clashed with the University of Ibadan at the semi-final stage, in a bid to secure a place in the final. After a series of intense academic contests and critical thinking assessments, Team OAU defeats Team UI and proceeds into the finals.
In the final round, OAU will be facing the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), who defeated the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) with a dominatory score of 106–48 to qualify for the final stage.
As it stands, all eyes are on Team OAU, as they prepare to battle for the crown with Team FUTA in what promises to be a highly suspenseful and anticipated contest between the two renowned federal universities in South-West Nigeria.
