THE PENSION

“What the hell happened back there?” Tola screamed. This was after Tola and his cohorts had robbed a retired public officer, Mr. Adeboye, of his pension. The plan was to take the money without any failure but Supo, a member of the gang, mistakenly fired into the air which attracted the attention of other residents. The police had arrived few minutes after the operation and gave the gang a hot chase, it was during this chase that Steve was shot on the head.

It started when final year students in the History department were asked to pay a sum of N55, 000 [Fifty-five thousand naira] for their final year programs. Tola, Supo, Steve, Daniel and Andrew are best friends and were stunned at this development because they had no resources to pay for the programs. They started making plans to get the money, Supo advised them to sell some of their things to get the money, and the others rejected the idea. Stephen said they should apply for some menial jobs, the idea was seen as disgusting.

But Tola came up with an idea which they least expected. “ Guys, there is a man that lives three blocks away from our hostel, he is a retired public officer and has just received his pension of five million naira, if we can get our hands on the money the better for us.” At the mention of this, they were all surprised. “Tola, I never expected this from you, you are saying we should steal from a man who has just collected the money for all the years he spent in public service. This is unbelievable.” Andrew expressed his disappointment. One by one they left the place, leaving Tola alone at the stop.

They never talked to Tola for three weeks, then it was announced that they had a week to make the payment. Andrew, Steve, Supo and Daniel discussed amongst themselves on how to get the money, they decided to go with Tola’s plan. Pleading with Tola felt like hell, Tola took his time to accept their plea. They started planning on how to rob the man, Tola was to take care of ammunitions, Supo was to get a van, Daniel and Andrew were in charge of surveillance and Steve got the masks.

Days later they were in Mr. Adeboye’s house, Mr. Adeboye could not give the thieves the money, this pissed Supo, who in an attempt to make Mr. Adeboye scared, shot into the air, and this attracted the attention of other residents. Mr. Adeboye feared for his life and gave them the money, the thieves jumped into the vehicle swiftly. Moments later they were chased by the police which led to Steve’s death after a gunshot. They escaped from the police, Tola was, however, annoyed especially at Supo for ruining the well planned operation.

The police started investigation and they discovered an identification card bearing, ADESOKUN ADETOLA, this gave them a lead to tracking the criminals. Tola and his cohorts were arrested and faced the wrath of the law. Meanwhile the final year programs were cancelled because of the death of the member of the class, Steve.
