OAU Moves to Pioneer Nigeria’s First University-Based Organ Studies Programme

The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has initiated plans to establish Organ Studies through a partnership with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Church Organ Projects in Nigeria (CHOPIN) and an alumnus of the university, Lanre Delano.

The proposed programme will be domiciled in the Department of Music and will follow a structured training pathway for applicants. It will begin with a nine-month Certificate Programme covering foundational organ training, hymn accompaniment, and liturgical or church music interpretation. Successful candidates will thereafter proceed to an 18-month Diploma Programme, which will focus on advanced organ performance and deeper technical training.

The alumnus explained that the initiative is designed to provide classical music enthusiasts, particularly those with prior informal or formal experience an opportunity to obtain academic certification through structured training within a university setting. He noted that the programme is targeted at intermediate musicians with existing knowledge of basic piano fundamentals.

The Dean of the Faculty of Arts, in his response, commended the initiative as a welcome development aimed at enhancing the quality of classical and traditional music education, as well as reviving organ music traditions in churches and across the country.

He further disclosed that the accreditation process for the programme is currently ongoing, adding that new academic programmes must pass through 10 committees before approval, of which the proposal has already cleared about three stages.

To further demonstrate his commitment to music development, the specialist equipped a designated space within the Department of Music, named the “Lanre Delano Organ Studies Room,” with a two-manual Allen organ. He also disclosed ongoing plans for a separate building once the programme attains full accreditation status, as well as the potential donation of additional musical instruments through his partners at the Allen Organ Company, USA.
