The Ife University Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Students' Association (IFUTSA) of the Faculty of Basic Medical Science, Obafemi Awolowo University, held her "Cardiofit Connect" health outreach, on Wednesday 15 April, at Oduduwa Hall pavement, in a bid to promote wellness within the university community.

Speaking on the health outreach, the IFUTSA President, Olayinka Philip, noted that the outreach was primarily set up to create basic health awareness, by checking students' vital health conditions, including their blood pressure, weight, height, to mention a few.

He added that the health outreach also encourages the beneficiaries to engage in physical activities like daily exercise, in order to stay physically fit.

An independent observation by the ICONS Organization correspondents witnessed students and passerbys, trooping to check their health conditions, while receiving medical consultation and doing a little exercise with the Cardiofit exercise team.

Reacting to the event, Adeoti Julianna, a Part 1 student of Agricultural Economics, acknowledged that the outreach was nice and timely, encouraging students to never shy away from any opportunity they get to check that health status. “I was able to check and know my weight," she added.

Similarly, Grace, a Part 2 student of the Department of Microbiology explained that the outreach helped her understand where to make improvement in terms of her health conditions.

In the same vein, Blessing, a Part 2 student of the Department of History, affirms; “even if this outreach would be held on a monthly basis, I would definitely be available, because it goes beyond medical check up for me. I have been educated on simple body exercise via this outreach.”

Speaking with the lecturer in charge of the Cardiofit Connect, Dr. Falade explained that the aim of the initiative is to create awareness in the minds of students, to help them see the need for daily physical activities or exercise, regardless of their weight. She added that if a structure can be put in place by each Faculty or Department, such that they organize an exercise section once a month, it will really help.

Dr. Falade further explained that to stay healthy physically and be mentally fit, one must have good nutrition like a balanced diet regularly. Also one must be able to balance physical, academic and extra curricular activities in order to stay healthy physically and mentally.

The lecturer also recommends that the university community be structured with more places where fruits and veggies can be easily procured, rather than junks,  in order to encourage students to eat more fruits and veggies. Building physical activities or exercise into the academic structure will really go a long way to help students and lecturers keep fit and avoid the risk of having Cardiovascular diseases.
