OAU Tops Medal Chart at Shuttle Showdown Badminton Tournament
Excitements gripped the university community, sequel to the OAU badminton team achievements at two-day shuttle showdown badminton tournament, held at the OAU Indoor Sports Court located at the Department of Kinesiology and Health Recreation (KHR), between Friday 30 and Saturday 31, January, as university badminton team clings top honours across singles, doubles, and mixed doubles events in the tournament.
Activities on the first day were initially scheduled to begin at 11 a.m., however, the event was prolonged till 3:30 p.m., as a result of delay in arrival of some expected institutions, and failure to meet financial demands, from one of the invited institutions.

The tournament featured intense matches in Men’s and Women’s Singles, Men’s and Women’s Doubles, and Mixed Doubles, with several games keeping spectators on the edge of their seats
In the Men’s Singles, Bobola and Moses recorded straight-set victories, while Alimi and Martin went on a thrilling three-game battle, ultimately won 2-1 by Martin.
Similarly, in the Women’s Singles, Ajayi Tolulope of OAU, Alayande Deborah UniIlesha, and Odunlade Feyikemi of UniIlesha, impressed the spectators with convincing wins, showing strong skill and determination.
In the Mixed Doubles, several close games thrilled spectators, including a 22-20, 21-19 victory for OAU over UniIlesha.
Sequel to the matches, awards of recognition were presented to the highly exceptional athletes and contributors of the event. Odeyemi Moses of the University of Ibadan (UI), was awarded the Most Promising Player (Students), while Odunlade Feyikemi of the University of Ilesha (UniIlesha) took the Second Most Promising Player Award.
Akinbiola Akinbobola and Ajayi Tolulope of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) were recognised as the Best Male and Female Player, while doubles and mixed doubles champions was named at Abdulmateen and Juliet (OAU), and Moses and Jesse (UI).Special honours were presented to Dr. Akinbiola Oluwabusayo, Miss Ajayi Tolulope, and Prof. S. Babajide, alongside members of the technical and officiating team. The Award of Excellence went to Miss Ajayi Tolulope, and the Special Award of Excellence was presented to Mr. Oludare Olowatosin of JotSport.
Reacting to his performance, Odeyemi Moses, the mixed doubles champion from the University of Ibadan (UI), explained they he had initially gave up after losing in the Men’s Singles, however, the support and encouragement of his partner, Jesse, helped him regain confidence and secure victory in the doubles event, highlighting the importance of teamwork and resilience.
At the end of the tournament, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) topped the medal chart with four gold, three silver, and three bronze medals, totalling ten medals, with the University of Ibadan (UI) placed second overall, University of Ilesha in third position, while Fountain University finished fourth.
