OAU Inter-Faculty Debate Postponed Till Further Notice

The Inter-Faculty Debate Competition organised by Education Television Nigeria (EduTV) in partnership with the Great Ife Students’ Union has been unexpectedly postponed till further notice,  as a result of issues related to the availability and financing of the event venue.

The debate was originally scheduled for January 30, but was first postponed due to the First Lady and other dignitaries' visit, saddled with hectic activities, leaving little or no time to prepare adequately for the event, leading to the initial postponement of today.

In an interview with the Students’ Union President, Adelani David (Itabi), he assumed that EduTV had already reached an agreement with the university management on the venue, however, it was later discovered that the cost of the venue was expected to be covered by the Students’ Union.

The President further noted that the amount required was beyond the Union’s current financial capacity, especially since the debate is not solely a Students’ Union event and the Union still has its own major events coming up next semester.

Despite this, ITABI stated that the Union was still willing to handle other aspects of the event, including food, decorations, logistics, sounds, among others, disclosing that his team had already proposed the SUB TV Room as an alternative venue.

However, according to him, EduTV rejected the alternative venue, stating that it was not conducive enough, and subsequently announced another postponement.

Speaking further, the President expressed displeasure over a message circulated in the participants’ group, stating that “the Students’ Union could not secure a venue,”  describing it as misleading and worthy of an apology from EduTV.

He further assured students that a new date for the debate would be announced in due time, with a promise that the Students’ Union would release an official statement later today, to clarify the situation.
