DC Trybe OAU Holds Inaugural Mental Health Awareness Walk and Sanitation Exercise
The DC Trybe Community of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife, today, held a massive mental health walk and sanitation exercise to bring together students and other volunteers, to propagate the gospel of mental health awareness and the importance of ensuring an hygienic campus environment.
The awareness and sanitation exercise was facilitated by the DC Trybe community, a group of individuals concerned with contributing to the campus environment through execution of different projects that are beneficial and contribute to the students' community
While speaking with the Assistant Coordinator, DC Trybe OAU, Akintoye Dunamis, he explained that the project, "Sanity TheMovement+ 26" was a drive that determines to contribute to the student community, in a bid to create awareness about students under any form of pressure, especially fresh students that are depressed as a result of academic pressure.
In an interview with the project manager, Oreoluwa Oyekanmi, she explained that this initiative, which combines mental walk and sanitation exercise, cuts across all halls of residence who participate and listen to the awareness session.Daniel Victor, a part 5 student of the Department of Estate Management who is also the project coordinator, explained that the ‘sanity movement+ 26' emphasized that the movement was intended to increase the level of consciousness about environmental hygiene and its benefits to students.
The excited participants of the exercise also expressed their feelings, opinions, and enthusiasm about this great initiative,

One of the facilitator, Prof. Adesanmi Akinsulore from the Department of Mental Health, College of Health Sciences, noted that the most common mental health challenge amongst students are anxiety, depression, stress and substance use; including Cannabis, Colorado, Ghana loud, Cocaine, Amphetamine, and ultimately suicidal ideation
“This awareness movement is also a prevention movement because it makes students realize that they're not alone and they can come out of their shell to discuss with those they trust.”
The health practitioner further frowned at drug usage, advising students to always reach out to therapists or psychiatrists, urging students battling with mental stress to speak up, visit the university health center or open up to their various leaders.
Speaking at the event, the Vice President of the Great Ife Students Union, Iyanuoluwa Falade, revealed that the union is currently working on organizing a mental health week, recommending that students regularly visit the university counselling unit at the Division of Students Affair (DSA), to enable them take the most active steps required to resolve their mental health challenges.
Ensuring an hygienic campus environment and the consciousness of one's mental well-being are necessary to create an ambiance and a convenient learning environment for students
