Water Scarcity: New Borehole Commissioned at Moremi Hall
By Mercy Awatoma
Moremi Hall of Residence, a female hostel for students, mostly final-year, commissioned its new borehole system on Tuesday, February 11. The borehole has been declared by some students as a relief from the constant water crisis in the hostel and the unclean dam water. The hostel has two sides: Block A-F and Block G-H. The first side, Block A-F (where the newly commissioned borehole is located), and the other side, Block G-H, have both recently been facing water scarcity, causing some of the occupants to fetch water from the steel water tank in front of the hostel.
For the past three weeks, the hostel has faced an ongoing struggle with water supply. While Blocks A-F are privileged to have a well that can help alleviate the water issue, it has still not been easy. Due to the high demand, the water level in the well has decreased to near ground level, resulting in students taking longer to fetch their buckets since their fetchers can barely reach the water.
Moreover, the new borehole will serve as an alternative to the existing borehole between Blocks B and C, where students often have to leave their buckets for hours—sometimes from daytime into overnight periods—to secure front positions when the borehole water is available.
An occupant of the hostel, who preferred to remain anonymous, commented on the water issue, stating that the new water borehole will significantly help to address the water problem in the hostel. Therefore, it is something to be grateful for.
The new borehole system was donated to honor Mrs. B.O. Akanni, the Moremi Hall warden for the 2023/2024 academic session, by her son and friends.
In addition, the newly commissioned water system was not only built but also opened for use by the hostel occupants on February 11, 2025. This new improvement marks a significant day for Moremi occupants and serves as an important aid in alleviating the water crisis in the hostel.
