OAU Lingos That Students Should Know
By Adetunji Oluwafemi
Obafemi Awolowo University, as one of the top-rated universities in Nigeria, has some slang that is mostly used within and outside the campus. As popular as these slang terms are, many students, especially freshmen, do not really know their meanings. However, this article provides insights into 20 of these popular slang terms in university community.
1. Shana: This is undoubtedly used loosely among OAU students; it is a word used as an appraisal for a genius and intelligent person. Sometimes, it can be used sarcastically.
2. MOZ 101: This actually looks like a course code; however, it’s not. MOZ 101 is an act of wooing a female Part 1 student. Stalites often do this in an area on campus called Anglomoz.
3. Anglomoz: The road between two undergraduate halls of residence is known as "Angola Hall (a male hostel)" and "Mozambique Hall (a female hostel)." This road has a bus stop and car park where students hang out with friends and girlfriends. We can reasonably argue that Anglomoz is one of the love gardens on the OAU campus.
4. Jack/Jacking: This is the act of reading or studying, especially at night. Students who practice this can be referred to as "Jackie Chan" by their friends.
5. Dem Gimme: In OAU, if a student receives a score below an A grade in a course, then such students may be liable to use this slang. An OAU student may never use the slang if they originally received an A.
6. Academics: The areas on campus where major academic activities are carried out; these areas feature faculty buildings, lecture theaters, among others.
7. Road 1: This is the main campus road; however, if a student is shown or directed to Road 1, such students will be suspended from the institution.
8. Floor O: This is an area in the OAU Senate Building where the school management meets to discuss important issues, especially when a student commits an offense such as examination malpractices, which may lead to the student being referred to face panels. Floor O is like an OAU mini-court; many students pray not to be there.
9. Off K: simply refers to the "Off-Campus" area outside the campus.
10. Scabbash: This is simply an act of speaking in tongues.
11. As E Dey Hot: is literally a buns, puff-puff, and doughnut joint on campus.
12. Risky: is toasted bread and egg commonly sold on campus at night.
13. Dobale: is a Yorùbá word that translates to "Prostrate" in English. It is a cultural practice that must be fulfilled by actors and actresses whenever they visit the campus for a show. OAU students will never respond to any actor who fails to fulfill the cultural practice of "Dobale."
14. Yellow House: is a building for the Department of Mathematics within the Faculty of Sciences at Obafemi Awolowo University.
15. NFA: means No Future Ambition, and it's a slang commonly used for people sitting in a specific area in front of Oduduwa Hall.
16. White House: is a building housing two departments of the Faculty of Sciences at Obafemi Awolowo University. These departments include the Department of Chemistry and the Department of Physics.
17. Dem don sha mi o: means "I have been butchered" in English. It is mostly used by students who received unfavorable or relatively low grades in a course for which they were expecting a good grade.
18. Spagewa: This term comes from two recipes: "Spaghetti" and "Ewa" (Beans). It is a popular slang commonly used by OAU students that involves combining spaghetti and beans as a delicacy.
19. Awo Boyz: This refers to a group of students and residents of the Awolowo Hall of Residence who practice "Aro"—an act of teasing or mocking someone in an annoying manner.
20. Quarters: This simply refers to an area where OAU staff reside on campus.
These and many more slang terms are often used within the university by students, and only an OAU student can understand the language when it is used.
