Town Gboro Drivers Stop Operations Due to Hike in Fuel Prices, Students' Union Intervenes
By Adedoyin Oguntade
The Towngboro drivers and the bike riders made moves to increase the transportation fares due to the recent increase in fuel prices and its scarcity. According to information gathered from the Students' Union executives posts, an emergency meeting was held with the bike riders and they came to an agreement that the usual prices will still be in place till Monday, September 9, when the bike riders will provide a feedback.
A meeting was also held with the Towngboro drivers but it did not yield any positive result as they ended up leaving the campus. In order to convey students that were stranded on campus, the Students' Union executives made the union bus available and also stopped private cars to assist.
In a release made by the Students' Union on Friday, September 6, it was affirmed that the Towngboro buses are not to enter campus until the drivers seek the Students' Union and come to a consensus. It was explained in the release that the bus drivers left "after inordinately increasing their fares without informing the Students' Union or agreeing with us". The bus drivers placed a condition that they would only be available if the fares are adopted.
In a conversation with Timileyin Busari, the welfare Director, on Friday, September 6, he explained that "two union buses are available to convey students" and the Towngboro drivers are not allowed to enter into Campus at the moment.
