The office of the Financial Secretary of the Great Ife Students' Union recently supported students with a partial scholarship scheme set up by the office of the Financial Secretary to enable students having difficulties in the payments of their tuition fees to pay their fees. This initiative (the first of its kind) is aimed at reducing student dropouts within the university community.

In an interview with the Financial Secretary of the Great Ife Students' Union,  Dblaq said, "When I assumed office, I was determined to make a positive impact on the campus community and my top priority was to establish the Union Scholarship Scheme aiming at reducing student dropouts. Despite facing significant fundraising challenges due to economic constraints, we persevered and successfully supported 39 students. Our major sponsor was Enoch's Hub (owned by an OAU alumnus) and he generously covered 60% of the scholarship funding. Other sponsors were the CEO of Landmark Hotel and Olamond".

The scholarship supported students with the part payment of their Rain Semester tuition fee and it covers approximately 30% of their tuition fee.

The beneficiaries were selected from all the 13 faculties in the institution, via a link sent out by the Faculty President of each Faculty. From the lists generated via this link, 10 students were selected based on financial need evaluation from each faculty. Among those 10 selected, the Faculty Presidents were told to pick the top 3 that might need the scholarship the most. Selection was also based on a required minimum CGPA of 2.5.

Upon inquiry from one of the beneficiaries from the Faculty of Social Sciences who prefers to stay anonymous, she said, "I got the link via the my department's general group, I supplied my details and gave reasons why I needed the scholarship. Although three people were selected from my department it could only be given to one person per department. Fortunately, I was privileged to be awarded the scholarship. Moreover, it was a partial scholarship scheme that covers only 30% of my tuition fee but it was really supportive and also a blessing to me".

The Great Ife Students Union Scholarship Scheme henceforth be an annual scholarship scheme that aims to support students who have demonstrated academic excellence, but experience financial constraints. The goal is to ensure that no student drops out due to lack of funds. The Union hopes that the fully funded scholarship scheme commence will continue next session.
