"E-portal Indeed" OAU Freshmen Lament Poor Results

 Ayanfe Oluwafemi

Friday May 24 at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, there was avalanche release of several results of the courses taken in the 2022/23 Harmattan Semester across the 13 Faculties in the institution.

Surprisingly, SSC 105, a general Harmattan mathematics course for all 100-level students of the Faculty of Social Sciences and some other Humanities related disciplines had its results released during SSC 106 lecture - a follow up of the earlier said course, at the said hours of 4:00p.m on Friday, 24th May 2024.

The release of the results was said to have caused an uproar which disrupted the ongoing lecture. The students lamented over the released results claiming that the results were regulated and that the actual scores were not awarded because over half of students' population obtained a '40E' as their grade while a few had Cs, Bs and few As.

On further enquiry about this incident, Opeoluwa a 100-level student of the Department of Entrepreneurship says "Now I realized the reason why it (OAU portal) was called E-portal. It was quite frustrating and disheartening that I scored 40 as my total score. I believe that the results were truly regulated because I scored 10/40 on the test and 30/60 on the Exam. My thoughts were to have a good score on the test and a fair score on the exam because I believed I performed more excellently on my test other than the exam. After all, the test mode was Paper and Pen Type (Theory) while the exam was CBT (Multiple Choice Questions). Alas, the reverse was the case, it hurts but we move".

A student from the Department of Sociology who prefers to stay anonymous said "I felt so disgusted alongside disappointed when I saw that my score was the same as those that I organized group discussions with, despite all my night reading and dedication to the course. I felt our lecturer deliberately decided to give me a score of a student who didn't perform well but was given *"let my people go."* whereas it's not. I just hope other results will not be like this because I'm already giving up".

Akinkunmi, a student of Information Science and Media Studies, under the Department of Sociology and Anthropology says "My results shocked me because I thought my case would be like that of others but fortunately, I scored 68B. I was excited my case was different, alongside sober because I was just 2 marks away from having an A. I think our lecturers derive pleasure in adding 2 marks to get an E grade, but they find it difficult to add 2 marks for someone to have an A grade".

Alongside this, a general course (SSC 201) for the 200-level Social Sciences students was released yesterday, which also prompted students to hold the conclusion that seeing an 'A grade' from an E-portal, particularly on SSCs' ('Excess Cs') is like drawing water from a river with a basket.
