Economic Hardship: Payment Of School Fees Again Forces OAU Students to Consider Dropping Out

The recent reopening of the tuition fee portal at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) has cast a shadow over the academic aspirations of many students. A significant number of students who were only able to make partial payments at the beginning of the semester face the harsh reality of potentially having to discontinue their studies due to financial constraints.

On Wednesday, March 13th, the Division of Student Affairs at OAU reactivated the portal, allowing students who made partial payments at the beginning of the semester to settle their outstanding balances. Interviews with students in this category revealed anxieties about their ability to continue their studies.

This concern stems from a 300% tuition fee increase for students implemented in August 2022. To ease the burden, the university initiated a two-part payment plan. However, students who fail to pay at least half of the fees cannot register for courses.

While a benevolent alumni group offers financial aid, its resources are limited compared to the number of students needing support

A recent survey by an ICON journalist suggests a potential rise in dropouts due to financial constraints. Students interviewed expressed anxieties about their ability to afford remaining fees, citing the challenging economic climate and the limitations of existing financial aid options.

"The current economic situation is making it very difficult for my family," said one student. "With two younger siblings also studying at OAU, it's almost impossible to manage everything. I might have to drop out."

Another student (name withheld) expressed frustration with limited financial aid options. "I am ineligible for the government loan program, and I don't have any other way to pay the fees. It's heartbreaking to think I might have to give up my education."

These concerns highlight the potential impact of economic hardship on student access to higher education. Urgent solutions are needed to ensure that financial difficulties don't force students to abandon their academic pursuits
