OAU Student Wins Big In Pan-African Contest, Bags $1,200

Abiodun Mojolaoluwa, a student from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Nigeria, has clinched the first runner-up position in the prestigious African Liberty Essay Competition. The African Liberty Essay Competition, which spans 56 African countries, is an open forum for undergraduate and graduate students to showcase their critical writing skills. The competition aims to identify and nurture promising African advocates of freedom, providing them with opportunities to kick-start careers in journalism and public policy.

The theme for the 2023 edition was "Pathways to protect free speech in Africa: Opportunities for New approaches to an old problem." Participants were required to present solution-oriented, specific arguments and recommendations, emphasizing uniqueness in their outlook on the provided solutions.

Abiodun Mojolaoluwa's outstanding essay on this theme earned him not only recognition but also a prestigious first runner-up position. His accomplishment is not just a testament to his prowess but also highlights the academic excellence and intellectual capabilities nurtured at OAU.

The competition, known for fostering networking opportunities, provides a platform for young African minds to connect with think tanks and media organizations focused on Africa. It emphasizes the importance of free speech and critical thinking in shaping the continent's future.

The top 5 winning entries, selected from over 1000 submissions, will be published on the African Liberty website on January 20, 2024. The winners include Iwebema Emmanuel from the University of Lagos (1st place), Abiodun Mojolaoluwa from OAU (2nd place), Chala Yuye from Haramaya University, Ethiopia (3rd place), Speranza Kasenn from the United States International University - Africa, Kenya (4th place), and Elijah Ibaharalu from the University of Benin, Nigeria (5th place).

Abiodun Mojolaoluwa's achievement not only comes with a sense of accomplishment but also a cash award of 1,200 USD, which will undoubtedly contribute to his academic and personal growth.
