The interactive session was anchored by Adeyanju Michelle, who introduced the topic of media and the different forms it takes, including social media. The students were attentive throughout the session and were encouraged to participate by answering questions on the topic. Michelle taught the students the importance of being media literate and how social media could be used for both informative and financial advantages.
Fake news was also a major topic of discussion during the outreach event, with Michelle elaborating on the major steps required to correctly identify fake news spread across the media. Alofe Faith, the President of the association, also chipped in by citing examples of fake remedies that were shared on WhatsApp and Facebook during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In addition, Michelle enlightened the students on the ways in which social media accounts could be compromised by hackers and stressed the importance of having a strong password. The students were given copies of "Vaults of Secrets" by Olukorede S. Yishau, and were also treated to refreshments.
The event was attended by 28 students and 16 ACJ members, including executives. At the end of the program, pictures were taken with the printed placards on media literacy which were presented to the teachers as a keepsake. The outreach program was a part of the celebration of the Association of Campus Journalists OAU's 50th year anniversary, with an International Campus Journalism Conference/Alumni Reunion being the main event.
