Three Delicious Insects Nigerians Eat

Many people find the thought of eating insects disgusting. Are you one of those people? You may be surprised to know that edible insects are actually good for you! They have high protein, fat, and mineral contents. Some of these insects are also rich in Vitamin B12, iron, zinc, and fiber.

Of course, not all insects are safe to eat, but among the edible ones, here are three delicious insects that Nigerians eat:

Winged Termites: Commonly called "aku" in Igbo, "esunsun" in Yoruba, and "chinge" in Hausa, this is one of the most eaten insects in Nigeria. They come out of their nests under the ground during the rainy season. People have different ways of catching them, and then they are roasted. It is a delicacy in some parts of Nigeria.

Locusts: Locusts are the bigger version of grasshoppers and usually come in swarms. Although they are known to devastate crops and terrorize farmers, they can be quite a delicacy. They can be cooked in many ways - fried, smoked, or dried.

Palm Weevil Larvae: Also known as edible work, edible margot, or Rhynchophorus ferrugineus, it is eaten mostly by people from Southern Nigeria. This delicacy is often sold on the streets like every other snack. It contains proteins, omega-3 fatty acids which are good for the heart, and vitamins A and C.
