Doubt on Credibility of the Electoral Commission as Allegation Mounts

Congress Aftermath: Doubt on Credibility of the Electoral Commission as Allegations Mounts.

After the Congress that held on Wednesday, 11th of August, 2021 at Amphitheatre. There has been doubt on the credibility of the electoral commission of Obafemi Awolowo University to deliver a free, fair and credible election. On Wednesday, the electoral chairman (F.M Castro) and his commission refused to recognise observation and objection raised by congressmen on issues critical to achieving free, fair and credible election but only a few selected were recognised. This made many refer to the Congress as pre-planned and stage managed.

The main purpose of the Wednesday's congress was to lift the electoral ban - however during the congress, issues on restriction that was placed on contestants were raised. In recent elections , there had been a minimum requirement of 2.5 CGPA to contest for any position in the Student's Union.

According to the electoral chairman, this requirement was brought by the school management for political purpose but the electoral chairman is not with the majority of congressmen who are against CGPA restriction.

Majority of the congressmen believed that the CGPA restriction is targeted at radical and smart students to prevent them from participating in the student union election. This has resulted in suspecting conspirational alliance of the electoral commission with the management.

This incident has made some individuals point accusing finger at the Electoral Commission chairman. He was accused of being politically incompetent to occupy the post. It was further revealed that he refused to step down from his position as the president of NAOS (Ogun State) after the end of his administration.

There has been rumour flying around that the Electoral Commission chairman is in a relationship with one of the contestants, popularly known as Toyin Data, who is contesting for the post of the student union's vice president; even though this allegation has no proof or evidence to back it up.

These allegations against the electoral chairman has caused some students to doubt whether the election would be truely free, fair, and credible as promised
