Brawl Between Vice Dean, Social Sciences and Students at ODLT. Security Unit Intervenes
Students of EGL 206 started entering the hall four minutes early as their class, was due to hold by 12pm (of which they were to write a test that hour). He ordered them out claiming his time wasn't up and later became enraged by their slow response.
By 12:03, the lecturer (identified as Professor Ajisafe, Vice Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences) was yet to leave the class and was still sending the students out. He allegedly smacked two students on the head while still driving them out. Then, a student started taking pictures of the lecturer. This infuriated the Professor, who grabbed him by the belt and dragged him to the front of the class and seized his phone. What exactly the student said that annoyed the lecturer is not clear but subsequently, the lecturer slapped the student. This infuriated the students who came rushing down towards the scene.
He had previously been rumoured to have allegedly been involved wth students confrontation in the past of which ended with him (Professor Ajisafe) throwing the student's phone away.
An eye witness report conveyed that the lecturer allegedly said he would not leave the class to prove what he was capable of. Students of his class (ECN 306) were seen standing to leave as the time of their class elapsed but he allegedly ordered them to return to their seats to show his authority even though his lecture hours were over.
Dean, DSA addressing students |
Both lecturer and students involved in the assault were interrogated at the Senate building. The Dean, DSA addressed students and said that justice will be dispensed but students ignored and demanded the decision immediately.
After the interrogation from the security unit, the unit found out that the student was innocent of the incident as there was no pictures or videos of the lecturer on the student phone. The phone was released back to the student and was permitted to take his leave.
The University's PRO, Mr Abiodun Olanrewaju while addressing the student gave kudos to them for exhibiting calmness and their utmost coordination throughout the event. He also encouraged them to always speak up in this tune anytime they feel oppressed or if there right has been abused in any form. He ensured the student that appropriate justice will be passed as the Vice Chancellor or the University is already interested in the case.
The University Chief Security Office also addressed the students and thanked them for their cooperation and support throughout the situation.
