Great Ife Students Union Elections: ACJ Meets Dean, Division Of Students Affairs
The Executive Body of Association of campus journalist in a visit to the Dean of Students Affairs Office after the inauguration of Electoral Commissioner and Electoral petitioner met the Dean, Division of Student's Affairs, OAU, Professor I.O Aransi and had a dialogue session with him. This is in preparation for the Great Ife Students Union elections which will come up in three months time.
The president of the Association, Titilola, Babatunde Dayo started by commending the efforts of the DSA and university management on the successful completion of the just concluded event and further quizzed the Dean on the need to sensitize the university community about Great Ife Students Union because it is evident that a lot of students currently on campus know little or nothing about the students union.
The Dean in his response gave a detailed narration on the events that led to the suspension of the Union and what led to the eventual reinstatement;
“The event that took place today is a commemoration of what the university as a body has been yearning to have. Taking us back the memory lane, the event presupposes the fact that we have had a students union on this campus such that the university recognized the students as part of the major decision makers in the university. They are the recognized body that will see to the welfare of students amongst themselves. We have been having that before until towards the end of 2017 when there was a rancor in the central executives of the students union at that time. I remembered then, that the university administration wanted to guide against that and we invited the executives and the students union representatives as at that time just to ensure that peace reign amongst them but rather than having that, it resulted into more violence and things that were not in accordance with the ethics of the university.”
“The vice chancellor at that time called the students union executive then and warned them that they shouldn't allow the students union to the handed over to the university management because it wouldn't speak well but it was getting into a deathly situation and the university had to suspend (not ban) the activities of the executive council and the students union representatives council. We have however been looking for a time when we will have matured set of students who we can hand over the students union. We have been studying the situation over the years and we have now discovered that the time is now ripe.”
He further stated that; We did actually try about two to three times to create a transition committee but it was truncated along the line; that shows to a reasonable extent that the university management didn't want to suspend the students union. At a point last year, we took this matter to the university Senate to discuss the reinstatement of that union, however because of the COVID 19 lockdown, the senate in its wisdom told us that we should allow this reinstatement to be when students resume back to school because of vibrancy and the need for physical appearance and communications. Since we have however returned to a bit of normalcy on campus and we now have students ,we felt the need for reinstatement should begin and senate approved this in April this Year and that brought about the event of today. The event of today is a pointer that students are ready for the forthcoming elections because of the way the students conducted themselves.”
The Chairman, Guild of Editors of the Association, Peter Oyebamiji raised an observation on the reports that some faculties had issues in the process of electing their representatives. The Dean while agreeing that there would always be little issues in every election clarified the air on any receipt of any complaint.
“In an election, you can't have 100 percent without any rancor. You know we are human beings and students themselves are also humans and whether we like it or not some people will raise issues. For the faculties, if we have a problem in the one or two faculties and we are able to resolve them then that will not stop the entirety of the process in place. However, were able to get our two representatives as requested. Anyways, there was no report brought to the DSA concerning the issues so we don't know anything but whether it was brought or not, we were able to get our representative.”
The President of the association informed the Dean of the plan to ensure transparency of the students union elections through effective monitoring and on-time reportage of the processes involved. The Dean appreciated the efforts of the Association of Campus Journalists and pledged his support to its activities.
