OAU: ILAJE STUDENTS CELEBRATES CULTURAL DAY

National Association of Ilaje students, OAU Chapter celebrated their annual cultural day programme, on 7th November 2019. The programme started around 1:19pm with an opening prayer, national anthem , great Ife anthem and Ilaje anthem.

It is the tradition of Ilaje people that when a child is born, he should be put in a river, if he drowns he is a bastard, but if he doesn't, he is a true ilaje child. This belief compliments there slogan, which is Ayemefun Ilaje meaning we're one, then the chorus is Awaye meaning we survived.


The event which was hosted at Agric Foyer, Faculty of Agric, OAU featured drinking competition,  Nasels drama troupe (NDT), Alakada, a comedienne, Drama team from OAU Department of Dramatic Arts,some OAU Artists of Hip-Hop music, rap, Dance and Fuji music from Alore musical band.


The special guest of honour, Prince Adedeji Elebiju, who also represented the Chairman of the occasion, Sir Bolaji Orioye, the chairman of Egbe Omo Ilaje gave his speech in Ilaje dialect. According to him it is his first time in Ile-Ife, he said the chairman told him to tell the entire Ilaje students to be themselves. He declared that 65% of resources in Ondo state is from Ilaje, because they're illiterates, they're being cheated, this is why they want their children to be educated, to bring Ilaje to the top. He made it clear that Ilaje people are not  slaves, beggars nor hooligans, but because if irresponsibility they now beg. He advised Ilaje students of OAU to keep their family name high, face their education squarely and  they be proud of Ilaje.



The President of National Association of Ilaje students, OAU Chapter, Akingboye Sunday in a chat with The Icons made the motifs of Ilaje cultural day clear. According to him Ilaje cultural day is  " To show the essence of the Ilaje language as a marker of our culture. To embrace the Ilaje history and also celebrate the Ilaje heritage."
