WAIST TRAINERS AND THEIR HARMFUL EFFECTS

OLOKOJOBI BARAKAT

A waist trainer is an undergarment made of thick fabric and hard metal boning. It is worn around the midsection of the body and is cinched up with a lacing system, Velcro and hooks. Waist trainers are meant to compress your midsection and ‘train’ your body figure into an hourglass shape.
Waist trainers are believed to reduce your waist size if worn regularly and that your body will take up that shape eventually, and it is usually promoted by a lot of celebrities and some fitness coaches. Having seen what a waist trainer basically does, let’s take a look at its harmful effects.

Breathing Issues

According to the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery [ABCS], wearing a waist trainer can be really discomforting and literally drain your energy, as it can reduce your lung capacity by about 30 to 60 percent. In fact, if the waist trainer is too tight, you may faint. Also, it can lead to inflammation or buildup of fluid in the lungs. Along the line, your lymphatic system, which helps your body get rid of toxins, can be affected by the breathing issues.

Internal Damage

Internal organs like the kidneys and the liver are forced to shift into abnormal positions when you cinch your midsection. Also, overcrowding your organs can change how they function and affect blood flow. Overtime, it can lead to reduced muscle strength, rib fractures and even permanent organ damage.

Digestive System Problems

Parts of your digestive system such as the stomach, intestines and oesophagus can be affected when you wear a waist trainer. You can have a bad case of heartburn from wearing a waist trainer, as pressure can force acid from your stomach back up into your oesophagus. Again, if you have gastrosophageal reflux [GERD] and you wear a waist trainer, matters may get worse.

When then is it safe to wear a waist trainer?

You can wear a waist trainer under a special outfit once in a while. As long as it is not too tight, you should be okay. Once you feel light-headed or short of breath, remove the waist trainer immediately.
