The Psychology Students' Association, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife (PsychIFE), held an academic summit themed “Beyond Passing” at the SUB TV Room on Monday, July 6.

The event focused on positioning Psychology students for excellence and opportunities, where participants were enlightened on different career paths within their field. It also featured a panel session, inter-level debate, question-and-answer session, among others.

During his keynote address, Uthman enlightened students on the significance of passion in learning, explaining that passion is the foundation of excellence and what helps individuals build the right systems and remain committed to the sacrifices required for exceptional performance. “Without the right mindset, it’s easy to settle for average,” he said.

He also emphasised that excellence requires sacrifice, as achieving one’s goals involves choosing what truly aligns with one’s purpose over distractions. The keynote speaker further encouraged students to remain focused, maintain meaningful relationships, and understand that excellence is the result of consistent effort, not talent alone.

The second keynote address, delivered by Kehinde Ayodele, enlightened students on various career paths and opportunities available in psychology, including Clinical, Forensic, and Health Psychology.

Speaking further, she highlighted essential tips for becoming a competent psychologist, including building a strong research foundation in one’s area of specialisation, fostering relationships with lecturers, developing relevant skills, maintaining good grades, and building a professional portfolio.

The summit progressed to a panel session themed “Exposing the Undergraduate Reality,” which featured three panellists, with Damilola Adam serving as the host.

The first panellist, Adewara Oluwadamilola, explained that consistency is what distinguishes students with strong academic performance from others. The second panellist, Ochuko Richard, noted that academic excellence is a function of doing the right thing at the right time. The third panellist, Babalola Emmanuel, added that self-awareness is essential for academic success.

The inter-level debate competition featured representatives from all levels, with a Part 3 student emerging as the winner with a total score of 57 percent.

Speaking after the event, Samuel Njoku, a Part 2 Psychology student, noted that “one thing that stood out for me was that good grades are not wasted effort.”

The summit provided students with insights into various career paths in psychology, as well as practical steps for excelling in those fields. It also emphasised the importance of skills and competence in one’s chosen area of specialisation.
