OAU @ 65: Faculty of Arts Celebrates African Cultural Heritage in Grand Style
As Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) continues in the spirit of its 65th year of academic and cultural excellence, the university, in its special highlighted event schedules slated Thursday, June 4, for cultural day, with a series of cultural and dramatic performances presented by the Faculty of Arts, to showcase the aesthetics of learning and culture of the institution.
The anniversary event themed; "65th years of legacy of excellence: honoring the past and looking ahead to the future"— vividly portrays the impacts of the university on academics, research, innovation, leadership building, national development and international relevance since its establishment in June 1961 as a result of the report submitted to the Federal Government in September, 1960, by a Commission it appointed in April 1959 under the Chairmanship of Sir Eric Ashby, Master of Clare College, Cambridge, to survey the needs of post-secondary and higher education in Nigeria over the next twenty years.
The university PRO, Mr. Abiodun Olanrewaju, began with the presentation of the cultural day theme—"OAU @ 65th Cultural Day: Celebrating African Cultural Diversity and Civilization" and the introduction of principal officers, including the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adebayo Bamire, the Registrar, Mr. Kamardeen Bakare, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Deputy ice-chancellors, the Bursar, Toyin Abogan, Librarian, Kemi Fadehan, among others.
The cultural event featured the presentation of diverse cultures with dramatic performances alongside cooking competition, traditional culture displays, and African fashion showcase.
Speaking in the event, the Dean, Faculty of Arts, Prof. Gbenga Fasiku, lauded the university council and students, for their massive turnout for the cultural event anchored by the Faculty, reaffirming that the faculty remain committed to fostering African culture via such an event like this.
In his address, the university Vice-chancellor, Prof. Adebayo Bamire, congratulated the institution on its 65th year of academic excellence.
He further commended the Faculty of Arts for the cultural shows and theatrical performances by the students who have integrated learning into practice.In a bid to ensure the cultural diversity of Nigerian society, the Hausa cultural display was presented by the students of the Department of Linguistics, with oral presentation as they wished OAU, “Happy 65th Year of Unwavering Academic and Cultural Excellence”— in the Hausa language.
All these cultural performances of multifarious ethnic groups in Nigeria embellish and mirror the beauty of African cultural diversities as significant indications of history, language and identity.
