GreatIfe Unity Cup Set to Thrill Campus in April

The maiden edition of the Great Ife Unity Cup, organized by the “BAMBAM HUBS,” in partnership with the office of the Great Ife Students’ Union Director of Sports, is set to kick off on Tuesday, 7th April, and span till Monday, 27th April, at the university sports complex.
The competition, “Unity Cup” as the name implies, is a football tournament setup to foster unity amongst the numerous indigenous associations in the university, as eight different state indigenous associations will be divided into two groups, while competing against each other, in quarter-finals, semi-finals, and final matches.
Speaking with the organizers of the competition, BAMBAM noted the maiden edition of the Unity Cup is primarily scheduled to feature only eight different teams, however, if more than eight teams indicate interest, knockout matches will then be integrated into the competition, in a bid to determine the qualified eight teams that will eventually compete in the tournament.
The competition will commence on a ceremonial note, where Associate Prof. J.M. Etebom, Member Governing Council OAU, Former Great Ife Students'Union Secretary General, the Incumbent Speaker of the Great Ife Students Representative Council (GreatIfe SRC), the Director of Sports, amongst other dignitaries, will be present at the kickoff ceremony.
Speaking on registration, BAMBAM also emphasized that each indigenous association interested in participating are required to make a financial commitment of #35,000 before the competition.
At the opening ceremony on the 7th April, each association is expected to send its representatives for the draws and groupings, as well as for the presentation of the rules and regulations guiding the competition; sport activities will continue later that same day with the official kickoff of the tournament.
He added that the opening ceremony will be held at the training pitch, as the main bowl is currently under maintenance, although efforts are still being made to secure the main bowl for the opening ceremony.
The competition will conclude with a closing ceremony featuring a cultural parade and performances from each participating indigenous association. Winners will be honoured with cash prizes, individual awards, and medals.
