OAU Students Raise Concern Over Non-functional Marker Boards
Students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, have recently raised concerns over the useless state of the white marker boards in some of the classrooms in some faculty and departments building.
“Good-for-nothing,” as fondly called by some students, implied that the white marker boards in some of the classrooms are just there without functioning appropriately as expected, due to numerous factors like permanent marker stains and fragments, which makes them unfit to use.
Despite the recent renovations done in the Faculty of Administration Extension building, especially in the classrooms, the white marker boards are unfit for lectures, as a result of the different stains of permanent markers imprinted on it, making it difficult for lecturers to write on it.
Muiz Sogola, a student from the faculty of administration, expressed frustration on the board's condition, noting that lecturers could not use the board whenever their lecture is held in that venue, due to several permanent marker stains imprinted on it, forcing lecturers to give only explanations.
the main boards has been discarded, and the department have improvised with the introduction of a short-sized boardMuiz further added that the students suffer most for this; lecturers sometimes unavoidably fail to properly explain concepts, which they ought to explain through illustrations on the board, however, the permanent marker stain has deprived them of the privilege to expressly give detailed explanations to the students.
Jesusferanmi, a Part 2 student of the Faculty of Law, argued that not all the white marker boards in the classroom are not useful as a result of the permanent markers alone, some are damaged to the point that some parts of the board have already been removed.
The white marker boards in some lecture theatres like ODLT 1 and 2, have been turned to adverts placement boards, by so many private Tutors who advertise their tutorial in it with permanent markers of different colors.
In fact, the ETF/TETFUND Lecture Theatre at the postgraduate college, 1000 Seaters Lecture Theatre, First Bank Lecture Theatre, amongst others, are not left out in this, as the boards have been demarcated to allow lecturers use a little part of the board for their lectures, while the remaining parts has been demarcated with tutorial adverts.
The state of the lecture boards in the many of the lecture rooms in faculty buildings is less than ideal, and if not improved, it will hamper the effectiveness of lectures, especially of complex technical subjects that warrant lecturer's illustrations.
Lecture rooms like HB 2, Rm 404 in the Department of History Topmost Floor, should have their board completely changed, while Tutors should be sanctioned for rendering the boards useless by writing with permanent markers on it.
