OAU Bus-Stop Remains Light Deficient Despite Rehabilitation
The newly constructed bus-stop on the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife campus, undoubtedly reflects a significant development, that further enhanced the radiance of the campus in the afternoon, however, the bus-stop does otherwise at night, as the newly constructed bus-stop is clothed in darkness at night.
Recall that the ICONS Organization, recently reported the rehabilitation of the OAU bus-stop, designed to improve mobility and providing a structured bus-stop and plausible road networks, within the university. The rehabilitation, facilitated by the Nigerian First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, makes the bus-stop the most visible developments on campus in recent days.
day view of OAU Bus-stop.Following its rehabilitation, observation of the newly constructed bus-stop revealed that, during the day, the aesthetic flowers, paintings, and properly demarcated parking lines in the bus-stop, gives the transport system of the university a more coordinated and beautiful outlook. For many on campus, it represents a long-awaited effort to modernise movement within the university environment.
However, the beautiful ambience only lasts during the day due to the darkness overshadowing the bus-stop at night, as a result of the poor lighting system. In an investigation carried out by an ICONS correspondent, it was discovered the newly constructed bus-stop has no functional lighting system at all at night. As a result, visibility in these areas drops significantly once evening sets in, thereby leaving the bus stop blackout, making it the shadow of itself at night.

The concern does not take away from the scale or intention of the infrastructure upgrade, which was to evidently and widely reflect a step forward for the university’s transport system. Nevertheless, lighting remains a critical part of road and public space design, particularly in a residential campus where academic and social activities extend beyond daylight hours.
Without adequate lighting, the usefulness of the improved bus-stop becomes restricted at night, when safety and visibility are just as important as structural quality.
As construction continues to reshape transportation within OAU, attention to lighting and night-time safety measures will be essential in ensuring that the project fully serves the university community at all times of the day.
The management should provide a lasting solar-powered street light in the newly rehabilitated bus-stop, in a bid to make the facility genuinely serve its purpose of improving the campus aesthetics, and transportation system.
