OAU Set to Host Inter-Versity Badminton Tournament.

The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife is set to host the shuttle showdown badminton, a two-day inter-tertiary badminton tournament involving five universities, aimed at promoting unity and raising the profile of the sport in the South-West region of Nigeria.

The competition, as scheduled, will be held at the OAU Indoor Sports Court, in the Department of Kinesiology and Human Kinetics (KHR) with institutions like Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), University of Ilesha (UNILESH), Fountain University, University of Ibadan, and one other university who is yet to acknowledge the invitation, expected to participate. 

Organisers noted that the tournament is driven by a long-term vision to build a lasting legacy for badminton, while providing a competitive platform for emerging student-athletes.

Events to be contested include the men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, as well as mixed doubles. The organizers further noted that no cash prize is attached to the competition, however, winners will receive medals, certificates, gifts, and awards.

The Shuttle Showdown is expected to significantly boost interest and participation in badminton within the university community and beyond.

By The Icons Organization and Indy Press  For Deborah, a 100-level student and resident of Obafemi Awolowo Hall of residence, University of Ibadan, staying in her hall of residence was a choice she made because she was in her first year of study. She believed this choice was the safest way to get familiar with the school and its environment. Posi, another student, on the other hand, resides in a school hostel due to proximity. “I stay in Obafemi Awolowo Hall of Residence because of its proximity to classes; the fact that it is cheaper, it is less stressful than house hunting, and much safer than staying outside school,” Posi explained.  Posi's reason for staying in Obafemi Awolowo Hall is the same as that of many students who find themselves in public hostels — it is often cheaper and closer to school.
