The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) male football team, OAU Giants, and the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) football team, on Sunday, 25th January, had a fierce inter-university friendly match which resulted to a goalless draw, at the OAU main football pitch (Main Bowl) at the sports complex.
The FUNAAB team reportedly arrived at OAU campus for the novelty match, organised to promote sportsmanship and strengthen inter-university relations. Although tagged as friendly, the match was played with high intensity as both sides displayed champions energy, discipline, tactical qualities, and passion.
Speaking in an interview prior to the play-off, the OAU Giants Head Coach, Faleti, displaying confidence in winning the match revealed that the fixture was part of a long-term plan to encourage more inter-university friendly matches, noting that the encounter would not be a one-off. The coach further added that the team’s plan is to make such matches more frequent in the future.
The OAU Giants Captain, Daniel, while speaking before the event expressed optimism and confidence of the Giants’ victory. “It is and not a friendly match, we are winning this.” He exclaimed!
From kickoff to full-time, the match featured several exciting moments, with both teams creating failed scoring chances which they could not convert to a goal. A dramatic late moment saw FUNAAB team find the back of the net, however, the goal was disallowed by an offside decision made by the referee which briefly sparked controversy about the transparency of the game.
Reacting to the incident, OAU Giants player, Sodiq, expressing frustrations over the team’s missed chances, stated that the referee made the correct decision, insisting that the goal was clearly offside. "I'll keep thinking over and over about the chances I missed, but FUNAAB's disallowed goal was justifiable."
However, Bayo, often addressed as Ronaldo from FUNAAB, stated that; “the ball was nothing but a goal, but then, the referee's decision counts, not mine.”
Despite the stalemate, individual brilliance stood out on both sides. FUNAAB’s players like Bayo (16), Bush Baby (25), and Richard (18) delivered notable performances, while Daniel (88), Sodiq (48), and Benedict (90) displayed a stunning performance for the OAU Giants.
The match ended in a goal-less draw, with both teams taking positives from the fierce battle, as they plan ahead for future competitions.
