On Sunday, 11 January, the Great Ife Students’ Union Transport Management Commission, announced the appointment of the new leadership of the commission, including Adebisi Adeyinka (Hon. Hicon) from the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences as the new Chairman, Oluwasegun Glory, as the General Secretary, Bowofade Obaloluwa, as the Public Relations Officer (PRO), and Olatade Oluwatosin, Abdulsalam Abdullahi, Olonade Paul, Adeyemo Adebayo as members.
Sequel to his appointment, Adebisi Adeyinka, the new TMC Chairman, showed optimism promising to build on the success of the past administration and improve on their failures too, while speaking in an interview with our correspondents.
In recent days on OAU campus, transportation has been the major challenge for students commuting to and from campus, from the long queues at the shuttle park to the immense crowd at the second bus stop. As a result, a number of students find it difficult to attend early morning lectures, or return home early to get some rest.
According to the new chairman, the above are the pressing transportation issues that the new committee would address swiftly while awaiting the implementation of the new transport system, specifically the operation of the new vehicles donated by the First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, which he assured of its implementation in his administration.
Speaking further, he added that he does not want the GreatIfe students to chase after the ‘ghost story’ about the new transport system; rather, they should focus on the current situation on campus and how to effectively manage the situation.
Responding to a question about the usual transport situation on road 7, the chairman said; “I believe this administration will be able to, if not put an end to it, but then alleviate it to an extent and see if we can extend the time for gate closure or see if we can find alternatives. Nevertheless, all of these still bank on the university management's approval and decision, however, we are open to dialogue with the management for a sustainable way forward.”
He further call on the GreatIfe students, charging them to have good faith in the new TMC, noting that his administration is devoted to maxing out all options to ease transportation on OAU campus. Adeyinka noted that students are free to air out their grievances or suggestions to any of the committee members through phone calls or texts to their contact attached to the banner used as display picture of all Great Ife Transportation Compliant WhatsApp groups, and expect prompt action from them.
The chairman remarked that he was motivated to contest for the position out of his passion for students welfarism and the ill of the GreatIfe transport system, including how it can be addressed, noting that his policy rests on creating a “safe, easy and a good transport system for all Great Ife Students.”
According to the chairman, the first action of his administration will be an intervention regarding the bike men, and if possible also to the buses, making it glaring to commuters and operators that the committee is to take decisive action.
