Embracing Healthy Eating in the Middle Of Academic Pressures
The rate at which academic rigor continues to skyrocket on OAU campus should not be overlooked, as undergraduates ought to adopt healthier eating, manage stress daily, while improving concentration and maintaining their overall wellbeing.
Research revealed that imbalance diet is more prevalent among Nigerian undergraduates, as many of rely heavily on fast foods, soft drinks, and irregular meals, as a result of work overload, tight schedules, financial constraints, religious activities, and business multitasking, which negatively affect their energy, academics performance, and health in the long run.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that a healthy diet, simple changes in daily food choices; such as, eating a variety of fruits, vegetables, nuts and whole grains, and reducing sugars and fats, can make a prominent difference in supporting human's overall health and mental focus.
A Part 4 student of the College of Health Sciences in Obafemi Awolowo University, during an interaction with the ICONS correspondents acknowledged that skipping breakfast all for test and examination is one of the biggest mistakes often made by students, a little portion of breakfast meal helps to stabilise energy levels and reduce fatigue during the day.
Speaking further, the cub Doctor emphasizes that regular hydration is absolutely important for healthy living. He added that the saying 'water is life,’ to students is that it helps in sustaining long reading hours especially during tests and exams.
Findings revealed that fruit consumption is healthier than snacks and junk. Sugar intake should be reduced to the minimum for students, beverages should be replaced with water, and if consumed, herbal concoction should be put in place for them.
In related health research, it was maintained that eating well does not necessarily require expensive diets, however, OAU students should be consistent with informed choices, as food should not be just a source of satisfaction, rather it should be a critical tool for mental alertness, sustaining and resilience physically.
