OAU VC Proposes 2,500-Seaters Lecture Theatre at the Faculty of Administration Mentorship Programme
The Faculty of Administration, Obafemi Awolowo University, held its second faculty week and mentorship programme at the ACE Conference Hall, with a call for structured guidance to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic and professional culture.
This two-days programme drew top officials, including the Dean of the Faculty, Prof. H.O. Salawu; the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adebayo Bamire; the erstwhile Deputy Governor of Ekiti State, Sen. Adedayo Adeyeye; Orangun of Oke-Ila, HRM Oba Adedokun Abolarin; amongst other principal officers.
Delivering his welcome address, Prof. Salawu thanked the alumni and invited speakers for honouring the seminar, noting that it aims to promote a formal and developmental mentorship culture capable of guiding students toward academic and professional growth.
In his keynote address, Sen. Adeyeye emphasized the centrality of mentorship in national development, citing the Igbo apprenticeship model as a leading example of structured mentorship in Africa.
“There is mentorship in every area of human endeavour. The most obvious example of mentorship in the Nigerian economy is the Igbo apprenticeship system."
Speaking further, the Senator acknowledged the country’s challenges, yet noted that its democratic process has still produced modest successes.“Our democracy is not perfect. None is. We face insecurity, unemployment, inflation, poverty, electoral tensions, and a troubling erosion of confidence in the judiciary. In spite of these, we have recorded achievements we can be proud of since the return of democratic rule,” he stated.
Speaking in the event, the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Adebayo Bamire, commended the guest speaker with what he described as a “professorial lecture,” acknowledging the presence of Oba Abolarin, dignitaries, alumni, and students.
Highlighting the university’s historical significance, the Vice-Chancellor requested legacy projects from government representatives and alumni in the event, proposing the construction of facilities such as the “Ekiti State Hostel” or “Osun State Lecture Theatre,” with a capacity of 2,000 to 2,500 seats, to enhance the students learning experience within the university.
