OAU Holds 49th Convocation, VC Applauds Graduates and FG’s Support for Education

The Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, on Thursday, November 11, 2025, held the opening ceremony of its 49th Convocation, with graduands, academics, university officials, and distinguished guests filling the Amphitheatre for the occasion. The event commenced at exactly 10:00 a.m. with the academic procession featuring graduands, principal officers, deans, invited guests, members of the press, and the Association of Campus Journalists (ACJ).

Following the procession, the University’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Abiodun Olanrewaju, led the National Anthem and OAU Anthem before the Registrar, Mr. Adetunji Bakare, formally invited the Vice-Chancellor to declare the ceremony open.

Delivering his welcome address, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adebayo Bamire, congratulated the graduating students, praising their resilience and commitment to academic excellence. He described hard work as the “true harbinger of success,” urging the graduands to remain steadfast as they advance into new phases of life.

Speaking further, Prof. Bamire also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as the Federal Government’s renewed dedication to strengthening the education sector, citing ongoing curriculum reforms at the tertiary level and initiatives such as NELFUND and national educational boot camps. He noted that these interventions signify the government’s commitment to strengthening the Nigerian academic landscape.

Highlighting the breakdown of the graduating class, the Vice-Chancellor announced that a total of 6,562 degrees and diplomas were awarded. These include 5,549 undergraduate degrees, 959 postgraduate degrees, and 54 diploma certificates. He added that 218 students graduated with First Class Honours, 2,132 with Second Class (Upper Division), 2,244 with Second Class (Lower Division), 625 with Third Class, while 34 obtained Pass degrees.

The formal conferment of degrees across the Faculties of Administration, Arts, Education, Social Sciences, and Law was carried out by the Vice-Chancellor. This was followed by the presentation of prizes to outstanding students. Enjemo Wisdom emerged as the overall best graduating student in the Faculty of Administration, while Alabi Abeeb Damilare received the award for the Faculty of Arts.

The 49th Convocation Ceremony came to a close at exactly 12:46 p.m., marking yet another milestone in the university’s long tradition of academic excellence.
