ETF Hall Residents Decry Persistent Water Shortage
Residents of the Education Trust Fund (ETF) Hall of Residence at Obafemi Awolowo University, have raised concerns over persistent water scarcity in the hostel, describing the situation as inconvenient and exhausting.
Speaking with our correspondence, several residents recounted their daily struggle to access water.
Jamal, a resident of the hall, said the problem has become hereditary for all residents of the hall. “I stayed in this same hostel last session and I experienced the same. I don’t know the way forward, but there are people who can help us solve the issue. Maybe they are not ready to do it. I’ve been to Awo and other halls, and I can say the worse of all remains ETF,” he lamented.
Another resident, Enoch, expressed similar frustration, noting that nothing had changed since last session despite repeated complaints. “The hall management should provide a functioning borehole system. The one we have doesn’t work; the water finishes immediately. Awo, Angola and other hostels have working boreholes, so what’s stopping us? We have to go to New Market to fetch water, and this is not what students want,” he said.
ETF Hall residents spotted fetching water from OAU marketResponding to the concerns, the hall chairman, Atsenokhai Samson, said efforts were underway to address the challenge. He recalled that days before his election on May 29, 2025, students had staged a demonstration that extended to the Division of Student Affairs (DSA). “You could imagine how tough it was before such action could be taken,” he said.
Samson explained that the hall currently relies on two water sources — dam water and a borehole pump — which in reality function as “one and one-third” due to their inefficiency. He added that a survey revealed that the ETF Hall is situated on lowland terrain, making borehole efficiency uncertain, noting that pressure is being mounted on the university management to provide at least one new borehole to ease the hardship.
