The atmosphere at the OAU Mainbowl was electric, as hundreds of students flocked to witness the much-awaited finale of the Great Ife Football League (GIFL) 3.0, an interdepartmental tournament powered by ISCO Sports.

The showdown pitched a confident Animal Science side against a resilient Geology team in a clash that had dominated campus conversations all week.

Geology booked their ticket to the final after a nerve-racking penalty shootout victory over Civil Engineering, while Animal Science arrived with momentum, having dispatched Philosophy 2–0 in their semifinal battle.

From the blast of the whistle, Animal Science took control of the game. Their early pressure paid off in the 15th minute when Oladejo Abbubakri slotted home a well-curated assist from Mayowa, setting the tone for what would become a commanding performance.

The second strike came moments into the second half through Fiyin, finishing off a smooth build-up involving Abbubakri and Sanusi Ibrahim. Abbubakri then returned to complete the demolition with his second of the afternoon, sealing a deserved 3–0 victory.

At halftime the contest remained finely poised at 1–0, but Animal Science returned with renewed intensity. Although the vice-captain Sanusi Ibrahim and another player received the yellow card for overly aggressive tackles against their opponents, yet, the team’s discipline and tactical organization remained intact till the final whistle was blown.

Confidence had been high even before kickoff
Even before kickoff, Sanusi gave a statement, saying; “This is the final — we came to win gold.”  His words proved prophetic.

In his post-match interview, the delighted Abbubakri, tagged as the “man of the moment" by the spectators, after scoring two goals and an assist expressed his gratitude; “I’m amazed and excited. I just did my best and God crowned my effort.”

For Geology, it was a struggle from kickoff till the end of the match, their creative engine and tournament revelation, Jamal, who wore the number 10 shirt, admitted that injuries and inadequate warm-up cost the team their rhythm and confidence.

The award ceremony capped off the tournament, with outstanding performers recognized across categories:

  • Golden Boy: Jamal Oladejo

  • Best Player: Mayowa

  • Best Defender: Mayowa

  • Goalkeeper of the Tournament: Adeola (Geology)

  • Coach of the Tournament: Adeniyi Timothy

  • Top Scorer: Mayowa Faloju — 4 goals

In the third-place fixture, Philosophy clinched a 2–0 win over Civil Engineering, with Haaland scoring one and assisting another to secure Man of the Match honors.

With the trophy firmly in their hands, Animal Science closed out the GIFL season as worthy champions, sending a clear message to the rest of the university ahead of next year’s tournament.
