The Association of Campus Journalists, Obafemi Awolowo University (ACJOAU), on Saturday, 6 December, held its first sit-out session at the university Botanical Garden, where members network, connect, and socialise with one another while learning.

The event, which brought together the association’s members, executives, and editors-in-chief of various news agencies was moderated by the editor-in-chief of the Great Ife Network (GIN) news agency, Adeyemo Adeola.

The sit-out session featured games, dances, an interactive session and a dialogue segment where members of the association interacted with one another. The event was an eye-opener to the laughter and fun that exist beyond bylines.
The ACJOAU Chairman Guild of Editors, Adedoyin Oguntade, exposed the members to the association’s style guide, highlighting capitalization, date format, titles and many other guidelines to ensure uniformity across the board. Also present was the Editor-in-Chief of InFocus, Hairat Balogun, charged the members to always vet their reports, in a bid to reduce the work of the editors in fixing unnecessary errors.

Nasels Communication Bureau (NCB), Editor-in-Chief, also shared her thoughts on the member’s level of commitment, while making suggestions on ways to correct it.

Michael Olawuyi, while sharing her thoughts noted that the sit-out was fun, and it was an avenue to network with other journalists from other news agencies, and also to familiarise with the executives. Michael added that the sit-out was eye-opening to the association’s style guide, which he claimed to be unaware of before.
Another attendee, Shittu Daniella, described the event as “Fun and Informative,” adding that the event helped her to understand the rudiments of news reporting, and also gained clarity on some of her questions.
Queen Joseph, a journalist with Great Ife Network (GIN) also shared her key takeaways from the event, expressing anticipation of the upcoming movie night.

Speaking with our correspondence on the reason for the sit-out session, the President, ACJ-OAU, Esther Olamihin, explained that campus journalists work tirelessly in writing and reporting news events. The major reason for the sit-out, she said, was for members to come out, wine and dine together, in order to get rid of the isolation that hinders collaboration within the association.
