The Rotaract Club of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), in partnership with the OAU Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Youth Club, is set to embark on a campus-wide water tank cleaning exercise across all nine halls of residence in the university.

According to a flier circulating on campus, the one-day initiative—tagged “Clean Hall Water Tanks Project”—will take place on Saturday, November 29, and will cover Akintola, Fajuyi, Moremi, ETF, Alumni, Awolowo, Mozambique, Angola, and the Murtala Muhammed Postgraduate Hall.

Rotaract, a humanitarian organization rooted in the long-standing vision of Rotary International, has maintained a history of community-driven impact globally and within OAU. Although the club only recently returned to campus, its previous projects remain visible, including the popular bus stop shelter near the school gate.

The upcoming cleaning exercise is designed to promote clean water access, healthier living conditions, and sustainable development within the university community. The organizers are inviting students and volunteers to join the mission to improve hygiene and water safety across residential halls.

Moreso, the project aligns with key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:

SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being
SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation
SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals

“The Rotaract Club is calling for volunteers—students, sustainability advocates, and members of the campus community—to participate. Volunteers will assist in cleaning and raising the tanks while also contributing to campus-wide sensitization on water hygiene. Certificates of participation will be issued.”

Speaking with our correspondent, the President of Rotaract Club (OAU Chapter), Samson Fayemi, said the team will not only wash the tanks but also conduct proper chlorination to ensure safer water for daily use. He confirmed that the university management is aware of the project and has expressed support.

He added that the initiative ties into broader global development goals by promoting clean water access, public health awareness, and community collaboration. Volunteers, he said, will engage in hands-on cleaning, health education, and sustainability advocacy.
