OAU Debaters Emerged Victorious at the 12th All-Nigerian University Debate Contest

The Obafemi Awolowo University Literary and Debating Society (OAULDS), has emerged as the Best Debate Club amongst other Nigeria universities, in the just concluded All-Nigerian University Debate Championship (ANUDC), held at the University of Ilorin.

The 12th edition of this annual inter-varsity debate competition, which was held between Sunday 24th to Saturday, 30th August, 2025 has 25 universities including the host university Unilorin, OAU, FUTA, Veritas University, amongst others in attendance. These 25 universities were further divided into 70 Teams, with a total of over 140 participants in the competition.

 Essentially, the championship itself was also divided into segments,  including the Debating, Public Speaking, and Quiz segment, of which OAU debating stream tagged "OAU Team A," represented by Israel Ajake and Grillo Adedolapo, won the open finals and became the national champions.

 

Meanwhile, the Public Speaking stream tagged "OAU Team B" represented by Ogidan Olawolemi and Olaiya Bethel, also finished strong at the preliminaries, as they eventually emerged as the second winner in this segment of the competition. In addition, the contingent also bagged individual awards and trophies, as Grillo Adedolapo was awarded the Best Novice Speaker, Anigilaye Kayinsola, as the Second Best Novice Speaker, while Bethel Olaiya emerged second in the Public Speaking category.

In an interview with the ICONS reporters, the President of the Obafemi Awolowo University Literary and Debating Society (OAULDS), who was also a participant in the competition, Israel Ajake, attributed the victory to the club's relentless effort and commitment, saying, "It was a long time coming and we really deserved it, we couldn't make in the last edition, but I am glad we finally brought it home this year."   _Israel said_

 He further explained that the victory is dedicated to their years of training, dedication, and consistency, adding that the recruitment process of the debate club will soon commerce, charging OAU debate lovers to join the debate club in the coming session, as they prepare for the next edition, which would be held at the Rivers State University next year, where the OAU debate club will be defending her crown.

By The Icons Organization and Indy Press  For Deborah, a 100-level student and resident of Obafemi Awolowo Hall of residence, University of Ibadan, staying in her hall of residence was a choice she made because she was in her first year of study. She believed this choice was the safest way to get familiar with the school and its environment. Fresher's Week'24: Students' Union Holds Freshers Inter-Faculty Debate

The debate is part of the events that have been prepared for Fresher’s Week 2024. The event experienced a slight delay, as the venue was moved from the 1000-seater to Oduduwa Hall by the order of the school management, which requested that the initial venue be vacated because the office of the Vice President, responsible for the event, failed to seek permission before using it. The event began at 12:35 PM.
