Rising Worries About Zebra Crossing Compliance on Campus
By Mercy Awa
The zebra crossing, a marked path of black and white lines on the road, is designed to give pedestrians the right of way when crossing. Typically located in high-traffic pedestrian zones, these markings aim to promote road safety. However, on campus, questions are being raised about how effectively the rules surrounding zebra crossings are being followed by both motorists and pedestrians.
In interviews with students, varying views were expressed about the level of awareness and compliance with the zebra crossing rules.
Rachael, a student of Foreign Languages, observed that “some drivers wait, but some do not,” attributing this inconsistency to what she described as a general lack of enforcement of road rules in Nigeria. She also noted that students sometimes walk carelessly or slowly across the road while chatting. Despite these challenges, she stated that when vehicles are at a distance, she steps onto the crossing line, and drivers usually slow down. She emphasised the need for better education for both drivers and students regarding the use of zebra crossings.
Mercy, an English student, highlighted the strategic location of the zebra crossing near the White House on campus, which leads to academic areas. She argued that motorists should slow down when approaching such a busy crossing. According to her, many students hesitate to step onto the crossing, especially when a speeding vehicle is approaching. She further criticised motorcycle riders for weaving through crowds at crossings rather than stopping completely, calling the behaviour unsafe.
Kehinde, a Linguistics student, emphasised that zebra crossings serve as clear indicators for vehicles to stop once a pedestrian steps onto them. She recounted a personal experience where she had to run across the crossing because drivers failed to yield. “I do not think many are enlightened about it,” she said. “Some obey the rule, and some don’t. On a scale of 100, I’d say about 60% comply.” She stressed the importance of awareness campaigns for both drivers and students.
Management's Response
In an interview with Mr Adegboyega, the Acting Chief Security Officer of OAU, he stated that the management expressed its desire for full compliance with all rules and regulations, including traffic regulations. They emphasised that it is the collective responsibility of the university community to ensure these rules are followed.
According to the management, the security department is actively working to ensure that the zebra crossing is used in accordance with established guidelines by both motorists and pedestrians. They also encouraged student organisations and other groups to take on the responsibility of raising awareness about the proper use of zebra crossings and other traffic-related issues. The management appreciated the concerns raised by students and stakeholders regarding the matter.
